This project is a research study in improvisation based on the perception of jazz as a dialectical system which is constantly interacting with its environment. The spontaneity of jazz structures allows for playing over the changing harmony and metaphorically penetrate the texture of the fast-growing city. This is possible only if we imagine a modern metropolis as an independently functioning object, as a rational being strong enough to have an impact on the outer world. In this context the city is all-sufficient, still leaving some space for various experiments to be performed by hacking and decoding structural relations within its system. Our improvisational pattern is based on a neural network that studied archive recordings of legendary jazz musicians. New harmonic structures are generated as the improvisation goes on once every 30 seconds. Sounds used in the structures are recorded in real-time by 300 IP cameras all around the globe. During the improvisation, the sound recorded by the cameras is chopped into short samples and categorized in groups by the sound spectrum. Empty squares, rallies, abandoned construction sites, narrow streets, closed parks create the dynamic diversity of a sonic landscape within a composition.
Due to a randomized algorithm, there are no repeated melodic phrases in a composition, still, the sequence of phrases is quite certainly structured. Thus, we have managed to reach the balance between the chance music and composition rules without going to the extremity of the performer's outrage on the one hand and the accurate structure on the other.
