DJ Roc Raida - The X - Men 1996 Mixtape (Look What I Found)

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #7 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1993, a year which many consider the pinnacle of Hip Hop's second golden era. Sampling and production techniques honed during the early 90s had reached a natural maturity by 1993 with key East Coast producers such as Pete Rock and the Beatnuts establishing their own trademark sounds. The East Coast also ushered in a new harder edged sound with Wu Tang and Onyx both delivering gritty debuts. On the West Coast, the ‘G Funk’ sound which found its feet the pervious year delivered one of its most accomplished albums in the form of Snoop’s seminal LP, Doggy Style. 1993 was also a great year for emerging undergound acts carving out their own sound, Souls of Mischief being a notable example. Cover artwork pays tribute to the iconic Elektra Records logo.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Edition #7 (1993) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of the Hip Hop’s 50th year, we’ve teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this twelfth (and final) volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the years of 1998 and 1999, utilising only the Funk, Soul & Jazz tracks from which they were originally constructed – 60 original breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley’s iconic ‘Super Disco Brakes’ compilation series.

This mix is also the final mix of the #HIPHOP50 series over all. Thanks for listening!

Boiler Room asked me to participate in their Mixtape series by picking a genre of music that I grew up on... So I chose Mid- to Late-90s undergorund/backpack Hip Hop. This was the scene that I really embraced when I was starting to DJ. And the indie mentality of that era was a huge influence on starting Fool's Gold 10 years later. 

Unfortunately half of the video was lost!! But we were able to preserve the audio of the full set. So here it is in full, for your enjoyment... and here is the link for the partial video:

Quite simply, we live in a music culture obsessed with mixes, mixtapes, and any playlist iTunes is quick to provide us. In this day and age, putting together just the right mix is a drop and drag away; what was once a labor of love has been reduced to a series of 1s and 0s. Nowhere is the decline more evident than in the electronic genre. At the risk of sounding like an old man, anyone with a laptop can plug in, pull together disparate tracks, and play Girl Talk for awhile. The labor and love that once went into such sets has all but dissipated on countless “electronica” pages found on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Working hard for a paycheck has been replaced by “get rich quick schemes.” This guy doesn't believe in getting rich quick.
