Committed to showcasing the very best up and coming drum & bass talent, Hospital Records proudly present their brand new ‘Future Symptoms’ release series. Served in doses of 4-track EPs, the A&R squad have been hard at work finding fresh sounds and unique styles from the next generation of artists. Coming through to make their mark on ‘Future Symptoms Vol.1’ are Winslow, Mozey and Shady Novelle, Villem and Alpha Rhythm, Zeitgeist and Nia Archives.

Following up from his releases on Mitekiss & Mr Porter’s Goldfat imprint and Pilot Records, rapid rank-riser Winslow sets things in motion with ‘Amore’ which sees delicate pianos and trinkling ride cymbals flourish into a jazz-infused drum & bass masterpiece. Snappy drums and Winslow’s very own vocals flare into the limelight as he proves why he’s quickly progressing from one to watch to a staple of the scene.

With releases on Liquid V, Souped Up, and Serial Killaz, Mozey steps up alongside Shady Novelle with ‘Sometimes’. This floaty stepper warmed by Shady Novelle’s vocals soon turns dark and dangerous when a fizzling bassline and unruly drumwork take hold. This isn’t the first time this duo have done damage in the studio - their release on DJ Zinc’s Bingo Bass imprint received support from Rene LaVice on BBC Radio 1 in 2020.

Drum & bass master Villem paired up with one of his promising production students Alpha Rhythm, who hosts his very own drum & bass podcast which racks up thousands of weekly views. ‘The Maker’ is a treat for the senses - blissfully atmospheric and equipped with hypnotic arpeggios and soothing pads, this one is for the deep liquid heads.

Promising musical talent Zeitgeist and V Recordings’ EQ50 mentee, singer-songwriter Nia Archives lay down unparalleled vibes on ‘Move On’, as upbeat guitar strums and feel-good trumpets pave the way for meticulously crafted breakbeats and a hefty upright bassline. With both Zeitgeist and Nia Archives claiming a healthy selection of self-releases, there’s no doubt these two will be at the forefront of drum and bass’ next generation.

My all-time favorite 90s R&B duo. Changing Faces wishes they were Zhané.

I wanted a more dancefloor-friendly version of this song that kept to the original's overall feel. And since I tend to turn everything into Dancehall... "(Pineapple) Crush" was born. The original version is perfection but it's more of a babymaker than a partystarter. I think this take walks a fine line between the 2 vibes. Hope you enjoy dancing and/or making babies to it :)

Tech Notes: This is another one that was rebuilt, then remade from the ground up. The CD single had all the parts needed to work out a decent set of stems. Toss in some Detroit Emeralds drums and we're golden. I had originally dropped this via my TREW mailer exclusively, but this updated version has some production hiccups fixed and overall is remixed and remastered for maximum bootyshake.

Sup y'all !?  We back at it with another Gem from B-More !  Circle Of Native Vibes AKA Cee Now Victory was  a group originally consisted of 4 members named Born, Blak, Kalife and Ali.  This Against All Odds Album was supposed to drop late 90's only a couple of cds were pressed, almost impossible to find. They had put out their 12" in 1999 and the vinyl is not cheap. So we had to press this album for the 1st time on vinyl (not exactly the same tracklisting as the OG cd album, names can vary for some tracks).  CD format will be available too of course. 11 solid songs of melodious jazzy beats mixed with pure Knowledge & Great Flows too. Time to reveal the Truth my friends. The track called Nam has been added too, this one appears on their Holy Grail Tape from 94. Don't sleep on this project. Comes with Insert. Limited to 300 CDs

Based on one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite Funk groups. Kool & The Gang were a completely different group in the early 70s than they were in the 80s. A Horn heavy, breakbeat laden, Jazz Funk Soul outfit.  Their track "N.T." is probably the closest they came to a wandering, jam band type song, with the entire horn section getting a chance to breathe. With the kicker being the heavily sampled drum break that appears towards the song's end. Dilla flipped this break lovely on Q-Tip's "Breathe and Stop" and this remix cribs a bit from his version and peppers in a healthy dose of those boombastic K&G horns. Enjoy!

The 6th release for the emerging Addictive Behaviour label comes in the form of relative scene newcomers Handra – an exciting new duo hailing from Poland – who’s dark, yet at points liquid tinged, minimal take on DnB hints that we will be hearing a lot of from these two in the future. 

The two cuts on offer, set for worldwide release on September 15th, combine a nice ear for melody and harmonic progression alongside top notch sound design and banging, uncomplicated, rolling dancefloor beats. Elements of found sound, lively up the compositions adding a unique twist to their tightly coiled, minimal old school referencing productions, with disembodied pitched vocal samples offering up almost Burial-esq moments of emotional nostalgia.

Coat of Dust kicks things off in a sombre, reflective mood, with sun soaked piano riffs combining with a ping pong vocal sample, rhythmic foley and sound effects creating a moving backdrop for the tune to reside in. Warm, undulating slabs of classic 80s reese  bass finally unite with a crisp, rolling drum track, peppered with unique sounding one-shots, clinical drum fills and techy bass fluctuations creating a nice juxtaposition of liquid and dark, minimal styles.

With heaps of experience to draw on, and a forward thinking label backing them, we can only imagine that big things are afoot for Handra.

D.I.T.C. ⛏️🎶

This track was a single from Lord Finesse's self-produced 1995 Double LP "The Awakening". Of the Golden Era Rap crews, D.I.T.C. has got to my fav with Black Moon / Beatminerz coming in a verryy close second. D.I.T.C. gets the win mainly because their whole vibe has to do with digging for records, and how almost all of them pull double (or triple) duty as MC, DJ, and Producer.

This album comes from the short middle period between the later Golden Era and the Rise of Jiggy. But D.I.T.C. always did a good job of straddling the line between mainstream and underground when needed, so they fared better than most during the transition (O.C. "Jewelz" and Diamond D "Hatred, Passion, & Infidelity" are other great examples). Some saw a much higher level of mainstream success (Fat Joe), but the crew as a whole has an amazing legacy. BIG L RIP.

So yeah I'm a fan lol and I decided to add him to my series of Golden Era Stepper remixes. A simple revisit of a Barry White classic!
