What a pleasure and honor it was to open up for Bonobo in Kona, Hawaii. Took a lot of inspiration from his music and composed a flow of some of my favorite deep tunes that I hoped would flow beautifully into his set. Opening DJ set for Bonobo in Kona, HI (04/28/23)

The only disappointment from my 2014 Eclipse Festival experience was hearing my recording all fuzzy after I got home. However, after some creative inspiration over the past few days, I was able to relive the experience in my bedroom all over again :) I am pleased to release Darkness Goes Into Light my  Live Sunrise Set from Eclipse Summer Electronic Music Festival 2014 (Retooled). I swapped out two tracks (#'s 1 and #18) for flow purposes but the two new tracks are very similar in style to what was played at the festival. Other than that, the set is exactly what was played at Eclipse and recorded live in my bedroom on cdj's. It was completely dark when the set began, so my intention was to tell a story starting hard, and moving through weird and quirky and then into melodic as the sun rose. Anyways, enough of my babbling, I hope you enjoy the story and the ride.

Darkness Goes Into Light: Live Sunrise Set at Eclipse 2014 (Retooled)

My philosophy behind DJing and creating mixes is to always tell a story; a story for people to hear and feel. There is a story behind this mix. One that I would like to share with you. 

On April 25th, I opened up for Corey & Rebecca’s party: Futterwacken Presents: Willy Wonka and the Psytrance Factory. At the time, I was working on expanding out of techno. I had been strictly a Techno DJ for at least three years and only just started discovering Zenon, Kinematic, EPP, Horns and Hoofs Entertainment etc. Corey and Rebecca booked me on the premise that I bring things up and play more Zenonesque style. It finally gave me a reason to build a set that starts deep at the beginning of the party and builds over time out of techno. I wanted to record it to submit it to labels, but it didn’t end up getting recorded. Now that I look back on it, I'm glad it didn't get recorded because I wouldn't have recorded this mix; So it goes...

That set turned out to be the last time I would play for Rebecca. I was really happy with the set and would find myself coming back to it throughout the summer to pull a mix or two and refer to the tracklist. After she passed, I came across the set list in my notebook and started running through mixes and adding or replacing new tracks that I had come across that truly moved me. Like any creative outlet, it helped me decompress, reflect and blow off steam from what was a truly trying time in my life. 

One night, while getting ready to mix, I looked at my notebook and saw the set from Corey & Rebecca’s party with all of my additions/notes I made throughout the summer. I realized it was the story I’ve been wanting to tell for years now. An extended mix that encompasses all of the styles that move me: Deep Tech, up through Progressive/Hypnotic Techno, into Chunky, Funky & Dark Psychedelic Progressive Trance and ending where it all started five years ago… Psytrance. 

That set from Corey & Rebecca’s party is the foundation and backbone to this mix. Out of 26 tracks played that night, 20 remain with 11 new additions from artists that I discovered over the months leading up to this set. All of these artists truly inspire me and keep me dancing late into the night in the studio with my headphones on. It is a two hour and fifteen minute journey that starts at 122 BPM and ends at 145 BPM. I recorded it in my studio: 1st shot, 1 take, and no edits.    

Even though this might not be her music of preference, I feel truly humbled that I can create something drawing on the inspiration of her life. She touched so many people, and her memorial party was something truly special: A Proper Psytrance Party. Out of all the stories I’ve ever told through music, this is unquestionably my favorite and most special one. Out of any gift I could think of to celebrate her life, this is what I have to offer. Thank you Rebecca for touching us with your life, and thank you Corey for being an incredible human being, booking me back in April and providing the spark leading to this set. I truly appreciate it.
