What would have become of D.A.F. if they had been signed to Trojan instead of Mute back in the day? Add a good pinch of absurdism and social realism in the vein of prized film director Roy Andersson and Vanligt Folk might just be the answer. The Gothenburg group’s name can be translated to ’common people’ and they make use of primitive electronics, drums and skewed vocals - ranging from harsh social commentary to the purely nonsensical - to create their own take on body music. ’Hambo’ is the name of a traditional Swedish folk dance that was highly popular among the common people at the turn of the last century. With this album, Vanligt Folk juxtaposes the working class dance phenomena of Hambo with modern day rave culture. This is done in the most blasphemous manner thinkable, as is the way of Vanligt Folk. Concepts like nationalism, race and tradition are all treated with the same merry lack of reverence. The only thing that needs to be respected is The Dance and those who take part in it, whether accompanied by accordions or drum machines. Or both. 

This album is a collaboration between Kontra-Musik and DJ veteran Rivet’s label Kess Kill.

Diskotopia is extremely proud to kick-start 2019 with Girar, a four-track EP of new kaleidoscopic productions from Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre. 

Silvestre is no stranger to Diskotopia, this being his third release with the label, debuting with the gritty noise-and-thump Frank Pike EP in 2014, and following that up with the more buoyant, latinate Floresta EP in 2016. In addition to producing, Silvestre also co-runs the Padre Himalya imprint, putting out 2018’s critically acclaimed Focus EP from tombak virtuoso Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, Renato’s 2016 Alo Alo, plus his own Sport Theories and All The Things 12”s.

With the Girar EP, Silvestre continues to embrace the sonic culture-frictions between his home country and his adopted one. In doing so, he has created a pan-continental sound in which coarse-grained Ibero-percussive threads intertwine with digi-tropical synthetic tapestries; testimony of a truly unique artist in the modern current of electronic music. 

Opening with the bubbling Ir a Sagres, Silvestre constructs a basement-born psychotropic rhumba groove, strapped with fluttering arpeggios, nimble conga tappings and a firmly locked-in bassline. Following on, Deptford Bus is a woozier, mid-tempo spliff-house roller, stripped of the flora to leave a simple set up of haunted pads, crisp toms, and a deep sense of unease.

RC Surfer is perhaps the finest example of a soundclash of reggaeton, shoegaze and dub put to wax in recent memory. Here, Silvestre provides an ethereal soundscape with images of late-summer wining in city squares materializing through the cracks of the stoic riddims.

The Girar EP rounds out with the pseudo-rapturous Everybody Is Happy, a slice of breakbeat-house that nods lovingly to the halcyon days of rave past whilst holding a mirror at the present day with an unabating painted-on smile

Following our discovery of the audio artefact known as “Sublunar Point” in scrubland outside Antwerp, Belgium, we asked colleagues to scour the area for related materials. We can now confirm that a further audio artefact was unearthed and brought to the Safe Trip Laboratory for testing. The summary of our findings is as follows:

• Using electro-acoustic analysis, groove deconstruction, psycho-lunar testing and carbon-nuclear sub-division, we were able to accurately date the two musical compositions contained within the canister of audiotape. We cannot 100% confirm our suspicion that they were created by the same siblings behind “Sublunar Point”, but the balance of probability suggests that they were.

• The first work has been given the title “Amma (Moon Mix)” in tribute to its unique properties. We initially found no response to any of our tests, including patented methods such as tape biopsy and note sequencing. However, when a full moon was hanging in the sky, the musical work was audible both inside and outside the lab.

• We attempted to match the “Oracle Genome” sequence extracted from the work using our extensive database of audio artefacts that have been made available to the public via the Safe Trip Laboratory’s openness programme. We discovered that this particular work was identical to one that emerged from Belgium in 1993.

• To ascertain the optimal frequency of the second artefact discovered on the unearthed tape, our researchers handed copies to 23 members of the public and asked them to listen to the works at wildly different speeds. After reviewing the data, we were surprised to discover that the optimal frequency was 23,000 Hz. Curiously, this a frequency that only dogs can hear.

• Fearing our research methods were not getting results, a second team of human “guinea pigs” was assembled in a dark room, played the work on a loop for 17.4 hours and then asked to say the first word that came to mind. All 47 of the respondents said the word “Arrival”. This is therefore the name of the work, which we believe is a very special, unheard composition created at the same time as “Sublunar Oracles”, the long playing artefact mentioned earlier.

We invite colleagues the world over to analyze and test this audio artefact further in order to increase our understanding of this mysterious and thought-provoking item.

Paramida made her name as an integral part of the new Berlin school of DJs embracing a more expansive sound, a charismatic and eclectic idealism beyond the steady, straight-forward pulse of house and techno. Following five years at the city’s diverse OYE Records store, and alongside an international schedule of DJing, she has spent the previous five crafting her Love On The Rocks label in that same generous spirit. 

Now, with half a decade passed, she has called upon many of the label’s previous associates, alongside some new faces, to curate a four-disc compilation produced upon the adventurous and personal principles upon which the label was founded. The title of the collection is ‘Supergau’, which Paramida explains to mean "A disaster beyond all expectations". It’s a typically pithy title for a label that’s found a unique groove between dancefloor fulfillment and surprising turns, keeping it’s dedicated buyers and open-minded DJs on their toes, just as Paramida likes it. Still, it hasn’t always been easy.

“Those 5 years didn't fly by,'' admits Paramida. “I had moments of doubts and thoughts about stopping the label. But something inside didn't let it happen. So whatever I'm doing with the label is something that is so deeply rooted in me that I'm not ready to stop yet. This compilation represents five years of ups and downs, tears and joy, growing, losing and finding itself again. I've never really questioned or reflected it much. The label has been pretty much a mirror of my personal life, my taste at a certain point and the artist or person that was involved in my life at that particular stage of my life. As such, I want to give this first chapter of Love On The Rocks a nice closure.”

Some artists on the compilation return to the fold, such including Fantastic Man, Massimiliano Pagliara, Violet, ELLES, Etbonz, Dirk Leyers and Alex Kassian. Others are featured for the first time such as Francis Inferno Orchestra, Bartellow and Eric Duncan. And others again are a complete surprise, including Kornél Kovács, Daniela La Luz and Hermann Kristoffersen. ‘5 Years of Love On The Rocks’ presents an opportunity for artists to explore the charismatic boundaries between house, disco, new wave and acid, with the shared goal of sheer dancefloor bliss.

“Every record I put out felt like a message I'm sending out into the universe”, explains Paramida. “And everyone featured on this compilation is someone I deeply connect with, even though it's a pretty unexpected mix of artists. Here’s to the next five years.”

Jordan GCZ from deep! GCZ takes us way out and back again with Space Songs, his new EP for Future Times. This is techno for the techno people, conjuring all manner of classic styles from Red Planet, Source, and Spacetime Continuum, through improvisation and jazz to dig a tunnel into the gel of the cosmos. 

FT has recently been blessed with GCZ’s music via his collaboration with DC’s Dreamcast for 2019’s FIGS Compilation, and Jordan’s previous 12” (FT023) with us was a work of techno art that opened up doors in its wideview of techno, incorporating lush guitars and insect fuzz to club music.

GCZ’s tracks have a life to them that doesn’t happen in a lot of tracky techno; it’s very much of a human place that he constantly touches with his machines solo, or as part of the legendary Juju & Jordash. These 5 space songs are hypnotizing and operate on an axis of lockstep rhythm and dramatic exits through the sunroof. 

Opener “Funky Sock”s trip thru noise and static heads straight to a 313 funk bubble, live drum machine play on point.  “Half Time” burrows and burrows but gives way to bells and bliss. “Catbird Seat” is DJ heat, as Jordan combines a very Chicago stomp with synth lines repeated into hallucination. “Prodigi” recalls classics of techno past with straight up anthemic bass and pure synth rubber that he whips around the track, and “Bah Bah” is the jazziest thing there is, hitting a one-lightbulb house burn into luscious vocals and finale.

Future Times could not be more pleased to share this trip with the world. Tip!

The Flood

We now bring you a hazy, glistening bit of joy from Auscultation via the fine folks at 100% Silk. The track "Fool" is jittery and tense but also manages to have a delicate dose of melody and texture. The track spends over nine minutes building layer after layer of interlocking pieces; each bouncing off of one another while managing to never come toppling down. This and five other tracks make up their new record, III, out now on 100% Silk.
