Also played on the night: an unreleased track entitled 'Low Key' by Moody ( @moodymakesmusic ).

The tracks in this playlist are in no particular order, and were played at random on the night.

Beat Bingo is similar to regular bingo, except when a number is called out, a track by a local electronic music producer gets played. Other numbers are assigned to trivia questions and jokes, and everyone in the audience plays for prizes.

VCS - Digital Jungle

I just returned from a three week stay in Rio De Janeiro. Had an amazing time, hanging with old friends and meeting new people, digging old and new music, visiting countless parties and pre-carnival events. Rio is a music lover´s heaven and I came back to Berlin, inspired. Obviously, it´s Rio´s blossoming funk culture which keeps the city´s music output burning. Now that baile funk has become a global hype it is the cultural pride of the city, mirrored for example in many Afro Blocos dropping a funk tune in their carnival rehearsals. Parallely to its global diffusion, Rio funk is locally morphing into various micro or nano genres. Now that everyone can make music on their celular phone, even the smallest favela has its very own sets of producers and MCs and tracks which feature local or neighbourhood issues. 

Consequently, it feels like every day there´s hundreds new funk tunes popping up on Soundcloud or Youtube, often just getting airplay on one specific baile for a week and then quickly getting discarded. Currently one of the most exciting bailes of the city is the baile in the favela of Santo Amaro which runs every Saturday from midnight to 9am, audible all through the barrios of Lapa and Santa Teresa, dragging huge crowds both from the asfalto and the favela. 

What stunned me the most was the BPM speed with which the funk was booming from the massive sound system of the Santo Amaro baile. From 140 BPM to 160BPM high velocity funk seems to be the sound of the moment, with many tunes surprisingly featuring straight kick drums as a founding rhythm, driving the polyryhtmic batidas and frantic raps on top. Called "Afrofunk" , this current Rio groove sounds like UK funky on Brazilian meth, with some occasional - possibly unconcious - leanings to triplety 3Ball grooves from Monterrey. In short, this sound is hot hot hot, so I´ve quickly put together a 20 min power mix of some of the Santo Amaro tunes I could get hold of. Enjoy!

What are Visual Beat Patterns?

Inspired by the patterns found in the paintings and beadwork of his cultural heritage, the Ndebele people of Zimbabwe, and a desire to create a new tangibility to music, VULI has transposed the rhythmic features of his tunes using symbols, shapes and colours into patterns.

Each tune he releases comes with a corresponding pattern that can be read from left to right like a musical sheet.
The patterns are designed by VULI and then printed onto fabric and clothing.

VULI is a producer, Saxophonist, DJ and multidisciplinary artist.

Vulis sound blends a range of his musical influences, Afro-rhythms; Bass heavy beats and electronic production with a soulful twist together to create a distinctly global sound inspired by his cultural heritage as a Zimbabwean Australian.
Vuli has released music and toured Australia and the world, playing DJ sets from South east Asia, to Berlin to Southern Africa, as well as playing at Glastonbury with his band True Vibenation. Vuli was also featured on CNN Africa’s coverage on the new wave of Zimbabwean musicians.

“The world is starting to switch on to African electronic music now, and I have been lucky enough to be on tour witnessing them grow around the world, from Gqom and Pantsula as it exploded in Southern Africa to dancing to the pioneers of Kuduro in the sweaty clubs of Portugal, to playing multiple times in the country i was born, Zimbabwe, each time soaking in the sounds and rhythms that make African electronic music so exciting and adding that to my foundations in African music growing up and my formal music education…my aim is to bring these sounds to the Australian electronic music landscape and beyond." -VULI

His credits include two songs swept up on high rotation on Triple J, co-production that topped the Spotify viral charts peaking at #4 globally and #1 in the UK, support for high profile international artists including Dead prez, The Antibalas Afrobeat orchestra, J5 and Kurtis Blow as well as credits spanning multiple albums distributed and released in Australia and around the world.
Vuli is also a part of the Bare necessities team, both a show ion FBI radio and a collective of diverse Australian musicians bringing global sounds to local ears and highlighting the contemporary world music that is being pioneered in Australia.
Vuli also is part of the BMAA an independent, not-for-profit association that represents People of African descent in the Australian music industry.

A fun night for local electronic music producers. Like regular bingo, except when a number is called out, the matching song by a local artist gets played.
