Alton Luke, performing as Vaughn, is only a 19 year old college student from Long Beach, California. After a brief stint on the critically acclaimed show 'The Voice", he opted to begin his collegiate life while continuing to develop his music. During his two years at Occidental College, he has expanded his stylistic range, supplementing his rich and acrobatic R&B baritone base with the intricacies of classical, pop, and jazz music styles.
His newest mixtape is titled "It's Complicated" as if to simplistically summarize the numerous complexities that spawn from being between distinct landmarks. What seems like a brief, glossed over description of a relationship status is actually the perfect description for his mixtape. 

The opening song Know Your Weight disorients the listener in a sheet of ambient sounds comprised of echoes of his voice which symbolizes the layered contexts through which the entire work will be seen. From then on, Vaughn creates a narrative through which one experiences episodes of his life, each moment battling with the struggles of love, temptation, virtue, and vice. He evokes these themes melodically, lyrically, and contextually with each song being both an individual statement as well as an integral part of the project as a whole. 

Unlike most other heartfelt projects, Alton's mixtape is deeply rooted in the concept of recapitulating the elements that complicate his life (pun intended). The very wet and airy sonic undertones in most of his songs weave the explicit imagery into one well-constructed account of his life. "It's Complicated" is a perfect introductory album that reveals both Alton's vocal range and sense of storytelling. He shows great potential as a creative artist and we look forward to seeing how he develops his plethora of vocal talents in conjunction with the nearly-tenable worlds he creates through his music.
