Virgil Abloh x Braun “functional art” – March 2021 
 
“Internationalism” is a diverse and varied track. It refers to International Style, or internationalism, a major architectural style that was developed in the 1920s and 1930s, which was closely related to modernism and modern architecture. Braun’s Dieter Rams is a modernist hero and, to mark the brand’s 100th anniversary in 2021, Virgil Abloh has reimagined one of its iconic products, the 1965 Wandanlage HiFi wall unit.  The result is “functional art” where design bridges form and function with art.  
 
The track was conceived by Virgil Abloh™️ in collaboration with The Chopstars, the epochal Houston sound designers; the net result being chopped and screwed jazz classics. The track itself is an audio expression of the thesis in which parallels can be drawn in reference to The Chopstar process, which relates to the design process followed with Braun for the “functional art” piece. The hallmark of the work is rooting the industrial design and existence of the Canon to embody Black culture in a specific way that Houston brand of music specifically achieves - the Chopped not Slopped sonic texture picks up where design leaves off.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.
