Sky Garden (VY Canis Melodis Remix)

You’re a monster. That’s what they will say. Who are they? Don’t know.
You’re a freak. That’s what they will say.
But that’s only if I come back. I feel like I’m dying. My already grotesque body is filled to the brim with the unrelenting monotonous constant noise of pain.
My lips harden and push outwards to form a beak, changing the rest of my mouth. I try to scream but I have no voice. Razors pierce their way through my skin from the inside of my head like worms eating their way out. They fan outward and form a sort of crest of feathers… feathers? I’m turning into a bird, is what I would have thought if my mind wasn’t drowned out by the screams of my form. Two extra long feathers poke out of my eyebrows, and it seems they obey my commands.
My legs thin and shorten further, the bones painfully restructuring and the muscles weakening to the point I fall flat on the wet forest floor. My feet lengthen too, three clawed and hard toes pushing their way out upward and one down from where my human toes once were.
Human… I barely recognise that word.
Something feels right about this.
All of the hair on my body grows and fans out in the same way, its softness zero due to the mud I fell in, and various other bodily fluids.
Pins shoot through my arms too, but it seems I can bend them like I can my fingers. Or, how I could bend my fingers, because now they seem more like a set of fragile, bendy, tubes like the feathers on my head.
My back cracks and moans as it jerkily changes, becoming shorter. It gives my bottom a push, and spikes erupt from there, fanning out into a feathered tail. All the while, I lose all feeling and control, and my mind can only scream into the endless dark of my subconscious.
The pain subsides.
Then returns with more vigour than ever before. Yet this is not the pain of bones changing, this is the mind evolving, the insides adapting, the brain melting under strain. Noise just increases to 0 for what feels like forever, but just at its peak, it starts feeling different. Like no pain I had ever felt before. Everything is different, yet similar. Another token of the same type.
Finally at ease, I slip into the sweet relief of unconsciousness.

The Change, The Mask

This is a dream.
I’m surrounded by white. My memory is… blurred.
No. This is not a dream.
Laying on a bed. There’s some kind of creature standing above me, holding… a syringe? The creature, I see it concealed by the shadow of the light above. A spiked figure, with a short… beak? Their arms are soft, and the outline sways slowly from the breeze of the whirring fans. But I can’t notice that because my eyes are fixated on the syringe, the pointed tip gleaming and reflecting the light from the lamp.
“Hello? What’S going oN? WhoareyOU? Hello…”
My voice… it can’t come out. I try to speak but all is a mess of colours. Patterns. The pitch varies, sounding unnaturally high and feminine.
Good.
I raise my arms. Two yellow flashes where the creature’s eyes should be. My arms… soft. Flexible. Light. My fingers bend forwards and backwards like pages in a book.
I can’t keep them up. Arms… sagging. Pins. Needles. My body feels like jelly. I drip to the floor, my consciousness turning to goo. Everything turns black. My senses are consumed by the shadows.
A dream.
I’m looking in a mirror. But instead of myself, I see pure bliss. A thin, short sausage on spindles…? Is my body. Fluffy, yet long sticks protrude from the sides. I try to move my arms, and the sticks move as I command… are they? I bring them up to my face.
I can see so much more detail, individual feathers… wait, feathers? My body is feathery?
“But I Was a hUman… What is this? What happened?”
My voice still distorted yet pleasingly resonant with my soul. A large, curved, triangular object pokes out of my alien face, but upon touching it, it doesn’t come off. I can feel it… on me! My vision is obscured as something flops over my eyes. Bat. Flop. Bat. I can feel that too. I… command you to move! I… it moved. My… hair? Regardless, it’s a mess. Bu-
Vision blurs, moves toward dark. Everything moves toward dark in the end. It’s the nature of th-
I’m standing… I can see multiple figures like me. I try to say something but my body betrays me. In front is a vertical stripe…. I’m locked in a cage!
Aren’t we all locked in a cage? Life is a cage.
Something approaches… red.anger.lust for revenge.giveitTOME!! but I can’t reach. I flail my legs in an attempt to scratch an itch of vengeance for something I don’t know. But all I can do is fall, sink into the metal floor.

Ughhh… hello? Is anyone there? Is…
Wait… where am I? I don’t recognise any of this. It’s like… a forest, but something’s different. How did I get here? I… don’t remember.
The call is calling. The red seeps through me, my strength lies dormant, the mountains and tombs keeping it secure. The vision of a tunnel, open yet filled with the rubble of a once great land.
Time slows, trees turning purple, waving, green, outlines spinning, life receding. I explore this land, falling over my new body multiple times.
Vibrant, beautiful hulking mechs tower above me like sentinels peering into the void. The floor I tap along is messy and chaotic. All alongside are personalities expressed in blobs of colour sneering snidely, snipping at my sides as I rush past. Flies buzz me as I rush, rush again, deftly weaving through and around the sprawling metropolis.
Except…
I stop. Look back. There is no technology, no building to be seen, I’m still just in a forest. But everything feels homely.
I carry on, the woods feeling more like a highway than a slalom, until I reach the suburbs. The void beckons. A vast expanse stretches forever in front of me, its own existence boggling the minds of all nearby. The ocean. A deep rage is calmed, calmed yet saddened at the sight of it. Something isn’t right here. No matter. I continue exploring, walking down the beach.
Meaningless nattering breaks the silence, I can hear it from afar. There are others. I run quickly yet hesitantly, hiding behind the false sense of hope I’ve felt thus far.
But it’s all just chirping. As I get closer all I can hear is beeps and twittings.
Meaning is inferred. Language is constructed.
As I get closer still, I can sort of get the meaning conveyed through body language. Their form is revealed. The three birds reveal themselves.
The first is small, mostly light brown and cream, the second darker brown and grey, and the third, the tallest one, is dark blue and white.
Reed warbler. Dunnock. Barn Swallow.
I walk up to them, and try to open my beak, but no sound comes out. No matter what I try, I can’t seem to speak. They’re all looking at me… judging? Has nothing changed?
They’re speaking to me but all meaning washes past. Yet… does their body language indicate meaning?
No. How could I possibly know that? It must be impossible to gather… there are no clues, there is no similarity, nothing is the same as what I know… what do I know? I conclude that it’s useless to attempt to talk to these birds, and the deep emptiness of loneliness consumes me once more. Nothing but panic. Run. Hide. Maybe it’ll all be over soon. Run run run runrunrunrun…
Alone, lost, exhausted, feeling truly alien, I slump down and let the meaninglessness of it all overcome me, drifting to sleep.

So… I randomly turned into a bird, transported somewhere I don’t know, found some other birds but couldn’t understand them, and now I’m here?
Yep.
All the meanwhile, I’ve been narrating this and spouting pretentious philosophy… stuff?
Don’t break that wall.
I just have one question about all of this…

Why? I’m not special, I’m no ‘chosen one’, I’m just a person.
That’s just a movie thing. In real life, stuff like this just happens. You only think that way because it hasn’t happened to you. Think about it this way: getting struck by lightning is incredibly rare, but it does happen. Yet in our age we assume that a low chance is zero, because we think of ourselves as protagonists in The Story Of Me. But that’s only to people that haven’t been affected by it. It’s bias.
Right… why the lecture?

I’m you, but also not. Not a split personality, not a different soul, I’m just a different side to the same coin. But that coin had to be stamped, as before it was a coin it was just a piece of metal. I was made when this body was made.

Yes. You turned into me because your body was put inside mine. Or is it the other way around? So the real question is, which one of us is… us? Is it you, you who lost your body, and put your mind in mine, or I, I that didn’t exist before you did, but I still have all that is mine? Isn’t your mind different now, now your brain has been changed?
I did notice that. Is that why I hate things I liked before?
No, those are not from the brain. Those are built for you by everything around you. In becoming me, you merely tore down your own walls.
If you’re me, then can you take control of my body whenever you want?

I try to recall how I got here, but I don’t remember a thing. Can I remember anything? What’s my… name? Age? What am I? Who am I? I don’t know! Why! Hello? There’s no one here. What’s going on? Why can’t I remmember anythhing? Hello? What’s goiggn on? Helo? Wher amm I? I-
There’s a person. A shadow. Something behind the bars. Something that isn’t me. Not-me. You’re the cause. You’re why I don’t know. You’re awful. I hate you. I hate you. It’s walking closer. I hate you I hate you I HATE YOU… it… walked away. You’d better run.
Wait.
What was I talking about? Did I see something? Someone? I can’t remember what just happened. Wait… I can’t remember anything! Who am I? What’s going on? Hello?
There’s a person. They emanate darker. Darker than what? I can’t recall. Fog shrouds me.
There’s a person. You’re the cause. I try to say. But can’t. That only makes me angrier. I hate you.
And I rapidly start to slump down, fainting.

The cage is red. Red with blood. But there is no blood. Only the black wings of the night. But this time they’re blue.
I awaken, but only to anger. Hate, distilled in its purest form. Something about the cage is different. I can make it out. I pull the bars apart. The pain is unbearable but that doesn’t matter.

What was once a calm blue has become the crimson red stain on existence. Nothing works. Nothing ceases. The pressure builds.
You…
Finally out of my cage. I launch myself at the nearest thing, slashing my claws across its chest. Innocent blood spills across the floor. Yet it is not innocent, for it held up the pyramid. Take away the lower half of a pyramid, and you end up with still a pyramid. It didn’t have to be in this pyramid.
A small prick, and I can’t move. The white room has changed in hue yet again, its decorations have become demonic warts and infernal machines.
Agonizing pain hits me like a truck. I screech and try to fall but my body won’t let me. Still being held up. Mind breaks. The dam bursts and in gushes the waters of thought, feelings, emotions… memories. But not of who I was. Someone else. Me. Spinning circles with colours of the superhot burning sun in the middle of everything that no one wants to see and the crimson insides of my own demons with spikes made of purest iron. The fires of an imaginary unobserved forest encompass the lone small spark of life given by a tiny flower, red, yellow, blue level heat all spinning, twisting, turning, surrounding me, getting closer and closer and closer and hotter and hotter and faster, until everything coalesces into one.
I realise now.
I am Nomi.
The mist
is pierced.

Hello! This track, in celebration of reaching 300,000 plays on Soundcloud, has been remastered! Very few changes to the sound design and structure, the only changes there were to fix some dissonant notes and change sounds from synthesizers that no longer work on my computer. A lot, though, has been changed when it comes to mixing and mastering, as the original track was not great when it came to that. But I hope the charm of the original remains, and I hope you enjoy it!
