“The Ever-Spawning”

This massive insect was once alive, a relatively harmless fruit-eating creature. However, due to Pandora influence, its eggs have become cursed, and after dying in the process of attempting to lay them, it has become one giant cocoon for its now stunted spawn. The rot and decay of its corpse begin to drive its young frenzied with a hunger for flesh. Eventually, the corpse explodes into a storm of dangerous flies, ready to ravage anything in their path.

This corruption of the species’ eggs is leading to the near extinction of the Ever-Spawning. They used to be known as “The Giant Fruiteater”, but this harmless being has become a dangerous origin point. As the flies they spawn will eventually grow large themselves, “The Giant Maneater” all but replacing their peaceful ancestor is a very real threat.

In this interim where Giant Fruiteaters are becoming Ever-Spawning, there have been many attempts at a solution. Some have settled with trying to exterminate them all before they can spawn, which would certainly protect us but would be a true shame to let the species go extinct. We have attempted to foster Giant Fruiteaters and ensure they are not corrupted but to mixed results.

The young of the Ever-Spawning rain over settlements like a cloud, stripping skin from bones on any human unlucky enough to be in their way in a matter of seconds. No town or city has survived such an attack to date, and while flame-based weaponry staves them off, the swarm is often too much to keep up with.

With buzzing insect sounds included in the song and dour, mournful melodies, “Broodmother” has a certain hazy miasma to it that is difficult to put into words. It’s the heaviest song in the collection, one of the heaviest I’ve made, but it still has upbeat character, a reminder that even though a dense fog of flies and rot there’s still light out there. The buzzing, neuro-like basses are a really big point of pride for me, it’s sinuous and scratchy in equal measure. Proper disgusting too, which fits well.

“The Grim Entertainers”

Comedy and tragedy personified, these playful spirits haunt theatres across the world and embody the history of plays and performances over the centuries of human existence. Known to induce hallucinations of fantastical events, they seek more souls to join them in their endless world of fantasy, even if it means using those hallucinogenic powers to cause poor humans to end their lives in a stupor.

Affixed to the past, the world known as the “dramatic plane” is a non-stop theatre production, and in dire need of more cast. It is technically a form of pocket dimension, however, one that alters real locations into magical environments. It is said that approaching a theatre or stage at night is usually when the Grim Entertainers bring you into their world, showing you elaborate visions to convince you to cut your life short and join them.

Commonly, this involves making their victim act out the closing deaths of Romeo and Juliet, and after dying the Grim Entertainers bring the human soul to their world. In our understanding of what existence is like after being taken away, it is a senseless reality of extreme happiness and heartbreak in all moments, akin to a theatrical Pandemonium.

Many exorcists have attempted to remove Grim Entertainers from the places in which they inhabit but none have succeeded, as it seems they do not necessarily reside in these places but watch them for humans. Simply avoid areas of performance at night while alone, and you should be safe.

I’d liken “Shadow Play” to a theatrical performance, just one that happens to be haunted. The song has a rustic, ancient feeling to it that implies years of dust, contrasted by the surreal synth leads and tonal basses evoking something supernatural still present. Despite the slower pace, I feel there’s a great sense of playfulness to it… it’s cryptic yet entrancing like being put under hypnosis by a malevolent spirit, echoing laughter and screams at the edges of your mind.
