I have seen the sunlight wither o’er the vast midwestern sky
I have seen my own reflection in my lover’s deep brown eyes
and I’ve heard the ancient mountains say their soft spoken goodbyes
As leave to catch the tide

And I know the battle raging just beyond what we can see

I saw the sunset
the night that they set Ferdinand free
in Sarajevo, covered in melancholy
call it what you want, you’re hunted or you hunt

the coastlines rising, the multitudes swim to new shores
and locals build walls, forgetting what has happened there before
we cannot give them feet, as history repeats

but me, let me sing something new
I sing of a tangible truth
Believe like I’m conditioned to do
I’ll see it through

The light is fading, the violence and vitriol shine
and it’s contagious, I’ve no regard for what isn’t mine
the world will have to wait as we drape ourselves in hate

But I awash in self acclaim
I find we all bear the blame
realize that everybody’s stains
are all the same

hold it to the light
the darkness can’t survive

as we in solidarity we will not be deceived, you’re not my enemy
