Probably the most unlikely client for me would be Tyler The Creator. Tyler is a talented entertainer who had the brilliant idea to build transitions from song to song on his record out of radio ID jingles. I’ve been singing radio IDs for the past 20 years, so when Tyler’s manager called me, I was excited to work on this project.
Tyler’s favorite jingles were the ones with lush vocal harmonies from the 70’s AC stations. So he sent me some instrumental tracks and lyrics, and I recorded the parts from top to bottom as examples of what it would sound like when we got the singers into the studio.
After we had done about 10 tracks, I called him and asked when he would like to go into the studio with the singers. He said “What?! It’s done! We’re mixing the final tracks on the record now with your voice…” and that’s how that happened.
