Figure 46 featured Roman Poncet, making his debut on the label with a powerful collection of modern techno. Now its the turn on L.A based techno-powerhouse Truncate to remix each track, offering 4 inflammable tools for the floor.

Truncate is the alter ego of Californian producer Audio Injection a.k.a David Flores. Over the last few years his self release ‘Truncate’ label quickly became a quintessential modern techno standpoint. Now for fans of his pummeling, jacking and urgent sound, he turns his hands to Poncet’s recent EP, also likened by critics to the US producer’s trademark style.

What we find are 4 homogenous and very agile cuts. Each perfectly measured and controlled, their respective elements honour the originals, yet reduce them to their basic fundamentals. Providing some real treats for both techno, and house DJs alike, Truncate proves why he is one of the most in-demand producers around.

Following their ongoing relationship with Soma Records, Ukrainian duo Woo York are set to release their new record that proves to be somewhat representative of recent dramatic events in their country. Entitled I Am Against, both the main track and the EP itself are referring to the developments that lead to revolutionary struggle of the Ukrainian people. Fighting inequality, saying what you have to say and doing what you have to do seem to be the core ideas of the record. You might have figured that out yourself by spotting a rebel protester from January's clash with riot police depicted on the record sleeve. The EP also features a special remix from UK Techno producer, Ø [Phase].

Music-wise the EP presents the same idea: the epic energy of the title track highlights the drive that was fuelling peaceful individuals to go out onto the streets and fight for their rights. An excellent remix from Ø [Phase] follows a similar path, although in its own original way that has made the UK-based artist's name associated with the finest techno to date.  Closing the EP 'In The End' is a more abstract side of Woo York's music works that reminds us once again: every single act of violence is bound to come to an end at some point.

Premiere: Dense & Pika 'Sycophant'

The unstoppable force that has become the Will & Ink label now offers up its first remix EP. Those hand picked to work their own magic on three originals by the the Will & Ink production duo are Fachwerk’s Roman Lindau, Greek born Emmanuel and Yaleesa Hall, the mysterious artist who released her debut EP on this label back in 2014. 

Up first is techno heavyweight Roman Lindau, who is a key part of the Fachwerk label. He tackles ‘Mersellanious’ from the Mersenne EP and does so with his usual stripped back, well swung sense of techno funk. Next up is ARTS label owner Emannuel, who goes for a fierce, intense and edgy peak time techno banger full of raw texture and incendiary drums on his remix of 'Third Wilson' from 2013. Lastly, Yaleesa Hall sets to work on a track from the same EP and does so with a little, fluid sense of hypnotic techno groove that comes embellished with heady synths and a real sense of purpose. Once again here the Will & Ink label is showing the way when it comes to contemporary techno talent.

Will & Ink - Merselanious Wilson (Roman Lindau Remix)

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014. 

Alan Fitzpatrick - For An Endless Night (Jel Ford Remix) - Drumcode - DC140

Helsinki based label Friendship & Decadence consists of talented local producers who aim for uncompromised originality and by the sound of their first release deliver it with a bang. Joint Minds - which is a collaboration formed by Kade, Satoi and Poly Sone - debuts on the imprint a two track, acid laced yet ethereal techno record.

Commotion ticks all the boxes for the means to get the crowd moving on the dancefloor; an acid infused bassline, a crunchy rhythm section, a repetitive vocal cut and an uplifting arrangement.

On the b-side the trio takes a step towards a more deeper and modern end with their delicate and atmospheric piece titled Headerstuck. Great track to bust out in most occasions from early evenings til the morning dawn.

Entitās, is the second instalment of Jay Clarke’s BLACKAXON imprint, and sees the label boss bring out the big guns in the form of three distinct and diverse cuts. First up is Entity, an autonomic monster which has sweat soaked energy written all over it. It’s auspiciously one part deep, and more than double just as twisted. Things are far from linear with Entity, it’s mercilessly the sum of it’s own parts, and has the hallmarks of a true big room pleaser written all over it. A truly authentic demonstration of the old adage “It’s not where you are going, it’s how you get there”. Entity is certain to be reached for by all of the major players on the Techno circuit for a long time to come.

On the flip, Ghosts Of Acid is the Yin to Entity’s Yang. A plangent and introspective groove opens up with wispy cymbals, cleverly placed rims, hats and claps. Exploratory and evolving subaqueous acidic forays dare the listener to dive in a little deeper, with the reward being a very proficient and efficient take on the now classic Acid sound.

Existence Through Perception seeks to carry on where the previous two tracks left off. A driving groove and sinister hook lets up briefly midway to a near triumphant fanfare, only to be brought back to it’s mischievous overture. A perfect late night/peak time track for DJ’s looking to elevate the bar of their set just one more rung higher.

Mote-Evolver’s ever successful Parallel Series is now on to its fourth installment, this time with two West Coast producers - Developer and Truncate - going head to head. Pairing of the two is uncanny in many ways given their close friendship and the geographical base they share, and appears to be the perfect choice to highlight the difference between their sound and style to realize the concept of Parallel Series: contrast & compliment.   

The EP opens with “Drive Themes” by Developer, a producer who’s known for the deeply dramatic groove charged with masculine energy.  With its focused and streamlined forward-moving force, “Drive Themes” is a track of relentless agility.  “Random Attraction” maintains the same tempo but adds enticing elements of distorted shouts of melody on top of the ruthless yet smooth layers of chords and hats, all beautifully harmonized to perfection.  Developer’s contribution makes the darker and moodier side of EP and its stirring emotion serves as a nice counterpart to its slightly more lighthearted flip side.  

Fellow LA-based producer Truncate steps out of his usual sound of rock-solid and thumping techno with “Is It Skinny”, a spaced-out hypnotic track that contains a vocal sample that’s so demure and unexpected that it melts into the swirling bleeps of melodies, and you wouldn’t even notice if it wasn’t the title that gives out.  “Forty Four” is yet another track that’s born for the floor, inducing aural pleasure with its funky rolling bass dancing with congo-like drums and claps.
