Mi Ami - Towers Fall (Cassette Mix)

I recorded John Cage’s 4’33” at the Maharaja Food Mart in Xenia Ohio today at 11:20 am. The day is May 11, 2022. I placed an iPhone 11 at the top of the 4’33” sign- it moved intermittently with a light wind. There were cars and trucks passing by, a plane overhead, some music, car doors slamming, birds singing and some other chance sounds- looking forward to hearing the sign itself creak at times. There is also an extended version (5'46") that includes a fire truck passing as a crescendo.

Richard Meltzer is the crusty old rock critic who was a peer of Lester Bangs. He's heard it all and he stopped liking much rock after maybe 1974. So you have to go over the edge for a distinctly uncommercial sound such as this before you get a favorable if baited review such as this track actually got in the San Diego Reader in July 2000. Me and some buddies used to enjoy reading his completely hilarious and stream of consciousness nonsense that he wrote instead of bothering to come up with anything to say that he hadn't already said a million times. He happened to have reviewed a disk that I played on in 1997 as a session drummer. He completely skewered it because a press release by the songwriter had likened it to something the Beatles would have done if they had stayed together. (Yeah, what naiveté, right?) I had saved the clipping then but didn't know who he was till later. After that connection was made, the Magnificent Meatsticks, which existed only to help a few of us drinking buddies and prog music fans kill some Sunday afternoons, took advantage of the relatively new MP3.com site to post a bunch of nonsense like this. I emailed the Reader and told them of the existence of this track and just a week or two later, it was reviewed and in the paper!

Mike Keneally gave me a call on November 13, 1996 that immediately gave me a new hope in life, but also caused other great things to happen as life resonated and spiraled in untold directions. I'm surprised it took me till today—20 years after the fact—to post it.

He had about a week to prepare to get his band Beer For Dolphins out on the road for five weeks, opening for Steve Vai. Mike was in Steve's band and would then be opening for himself. He needed to do this though to enlarge his future possibilities. As you'll hear, I had five days' notice to go out for five weeks! The band guys had just a couple days more to prepare.

I'd only known of him for a few years thanks to his guest appearances around San Diego in support of some friends of his, and only known his own music for about two since first seeing Beer For Dolphins in one of those early days, and it "ripped my head off," as the MKBFD fan world calls those initiatory first shows.

I'd had a few moments of being of technical assistance at some of the shows I'd seen. By the summer before this call, he'd told a story on his early blog where my name first appeared in his world. But my year of work for a group called Rockola was a stronger referral since everyone in that band had been on MK's first albums. And also, I'd worked for Jeff Forrest's tape supply store and connected with him not long after my MK initiation c. 1995.

I'd just gotten my life on some path to ordinariness two weeks before this call. The four months or so prior brought with it my grandfather's death, a super pressured move from my childhood home, and strained relations with all involved, the admission that Rockola stage assistance was no ticked to escaping the material realities of that, camping out at my girlfriend's family house, and then getting a "good" gig at Pizza Hut where for once, I could finally pay to live at an apartment. Then once all that came together, this call...

Of course I took it! The rest would have to be reconstructed later. I don't leap on faith too often, and this must be one of the bigger ones. 

I think he actually paid me something like $37 a day on the road. Hey, it was no less than I'd make at home!
