During the pandemic I created a four part mix series for Triple J that was focused around my inspirations as a DJ and record producer. It sent me down quite the nostalgic path of re-discovery. I believe the pandemic became quite a reflective time for everybody at home. Not just they were pining for a life before COVID 19, but it gave them a chance to look back and discover what they liked about life in general. Whether that be art, music, or even relationships. 

After listening to all of this music, I decided I wanted to try my hand and write a timeless rave record that not only made listeners nostalgic for the past, but excited about the celebrations we all have to come. “Miracle Maker” is the result".

Populous is Andrea Mangia, a producer hailing from Lecce, a small city on the heel of Italy's boot. In 2003, he made his first jaunt into the music world with the album Quipo (via Morr Music). In 2005 he released Queue For Love, influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy's Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) and in 2008 he released Drawn in Basic. Both albums were widely received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global music map. He became known for the way he seamlessly blends digital sounds with the analog warmth of soul/hip-hop/whatever else he's influenced by at the time.

Azulejos, his forthcoming release, has a South American tinge to it (and is even partly in Spanish). He moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start work on the album bringing with him only a laptop, a small MIDI keyboard, and a microphone. "Lisbon became both my studio and my muse," he says. He wandered the city collecting field recordings— from trams to people singing on street corners. He sifted through flea markets for records to use for sampling (exclusively Portuguese and South American). Populous describes Lisbon as a city 'halfway between South American soul and European modernity, African in some aspects, and dramatically melancholic." He channeled these poignant fusions into Azulejos, named for the typical tiled facades in Portugal— simultaneously bright and decaying. The album features collaborations with Nina Miranda of Smoke City and Ela Minus, among others. It's a love letter to Lisbon, and a dreamy quilt of sounds he both grew up with and heard for the first time during his influential stay in Portugal.

In this era of social distancing, when international travel and dancing together in clubs has been restricted to our daydreams, "Body Yako" delivers the much-needed, vibrant, uplifting sounds of Tropical Africa, directly to your living room dance floor. Longtime friend and collaborator Thornato provided some guitar licks he recorded from Ghanaian maestro OT Woode (instrumentalist on Ed Sheeran's Grammy Winning album "÷"), then Captain Planet went to work building and arranging the beat, which fuses older elements of West African highlife and Soukous with the more modern aesthetics of current Afrobeat and Afro House. One of the most enjoyable parts of Dirtybird is to watch a talented artist grow. Nala started out in Miami cutting her teeth on the local DJ circuit and then moved to LA where she eventually signed with VonStroke and Aundy's Motherbird Management. 

Her weekly Dirtybird "TV Party" on Twitch is one of the most popular shows on the network. Each week she features her unmistakeable punk & new wave-influenced DJ style while also hosting a special underground guest, as well as her long time friend and local LA rave legend, Richie Panic. 

Nala’s debut on Dirtybird, “Psychic Attack”, is a gritty A-side with her own vocals shouting about the nervous the angst of 2020. The B-side, “Sun Is Hot” showcases her gentler side with a deep groove, a smooth vocal tone, and melodic vintage synth riffs throughout.
