CONNORS: (:09) “And it is a down payment assistance program for law enforcement officers, health care workers, and social workers – those kind of folks that need help getting into our communities.”

SATTGAST: Veterans and active-duty service members would also be eligible to participate.
 
CONNORS: (:10) “It is for lower-level paid workers that are coming in and they do have to pay it back if they sell their house, if they refinance their house, if they rent their house, the money goes back to the state of Washington.”

SUGGESTED LEAD:  A bill to make financial education a graduation requirement for public high school students has passed the state House of Representatives. John Sattgast reports.

SATTGAST: House Bill 1285 by Walla Walla Republican Representative Skyler Rude would require all public high schools in Washington to provide financial education instruction aligned with state standards by the 2027 school year. 

RUDE: “Young people that are exiting high school, some of their first decisions may include renting, understanding a lease, the renter’s insurance and the liability that is included in that; how to purchase, maybe, their first car.”

The measure would also make completing financial education courses a graduation requirement, starting with the class of 2031.

RUDE: “It’s really a great step for a person exiting high school to start off their life and their career on the right foot.”

SATTGAST: The bill now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

Five 17-year-old juvenile inmates were charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 17-year-old Christopher Peterman during Memorial Day 1982 in the Ada County Jail in Boise, Idaho. Peterman was jailed for failure to pay about $65 in traffic fines. The suspects included Richard B. Engie, Andy D. Anderson, Randall McKeown, Sean Matthews and Joseph Khran.
