SUGGESTED LEAD: Following Governor Bob Ferguson’s inaugural address to the Legislature Wednesday, Republicans provided their own ideas about improving lives in Washington state. John Sattgast reports.

SATTGAST: (:56) Offering a Republican perspective, Grandview freshman Representative Gloria Mendoza highlighted the challenges facing Washingtonians. The 14th District Republican noted Washington has high prices for groceries, gas and housing, the third highest crime rate, homelessness, and students failing grade levels in math, reading and writing.

MENDOZA (:12) “Democratic leaders are proposing new taxes — on our homes, our income, our jobs, and even on innovation itself, just to keep up the status quo.”

SATTGAST: Mendoza said it doesn’t have to be this way. She noted Republicans in the Legislature have a plan of real solutions to fix Washington. 

MENDOZA (:11) “We want to improve life for all Washingtonians. We want safer neighborhoods, cleaner air, better schools, more affordable housing, and shorter commutes.”

Rep. Gloria Mendoza discussed her first six weeks in office as she joined Robb Francis and John McKay on “The Bottom Line,” KONA Radio’s afternoon talk show.  

Mendoza, R-Grandview, voiced her concern over a bill in the House Transportation Committee that would force motorists to pay a fee for every mile they drive. She also discussed her bill that would allow law enforcement officers to initially question juveniles without legal counsel present if the officer believes a suspected juvenile could be cleared of a potential crime.

Joining Robb Francis on KONA’s “The Bottom Line” talk show on Friday afternoon, Rep. Gloria Mendoza, R, Grandview, and Rep. Deb Manjarrez, R-Wapato, discussed the lengthy battles on the House floor over bad bills Democrats are passing. The 14th District lawmakers expressed concern over measures such as the early release of criminals, policies that make housing and other things more expensive during an affordability crisis, and a measure that would gut the Parents’ Bill of Rights.
