Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group.

Following on from last year’s debut long-player, and a run of gigs and festivals with his band, including touring Europe as Stones Throw artists Myron & E’s new backing band, Gene Dudley returns with a taste of things to come and his first ever vocal offering on 7-inches of wax. Those vocals come courtesy of London singer and erstwhile DJ, the wonderfully monikered Anne Frankenstein, whose contribution to Gene’s canny cover of Richard “Groove” Holmes’ classic No Trouble On The Mountain is something of a floor filler and a rather fitting release in Wah Wah 45s’ fifteenth year, as Holmes’ original was one of the label’s first ever 7-inch releases!

On the flip comes the first real flavour of Gene’s forthcoming sophomore LP, due to drop (on vinyl too!) this November. Stevie Flare is a much more up-tempo and foot friendly affair than previously outings, and has something of a tropical feel courtesy of warm highlife style guitars as well as those trademark Gene Dudley horns.

Look out for the Gene Dudley Group live band playing at a venue near you this autumn, including a special session at London’s Jazz Café on October 24th for none other than BBC 6Music’s funk & soul ambassador, Craig Charles!

Newcomer Pie Eye Collective takes the epic album closer from 2019's Sonkei by Rōnin Arkestra and gives it the most forthright remix the band have received yet. Blending house and broken beat vibes with a fluidity and naturalness that completely belies how early the producer is in his career, Tempestuous Temperaments flies through huge piano stabs and massive horn loops. This is very big music. 

Rōnin Arkestra started life with de Clive Lowe wanting to create a project with some of his favourite Japanese musicians, unaware of the sound, shape or vibe it would manifest. Reaching out to his musician friends including Sauce81, they began recording at Red Bull Studio in Tokyo and the chemistry was instant, creating an impulsive sound that blended spiritual jazz and beat sensibilities heavy on the improvisation. 

“That’s the beauty of this collective - everyone is so great at what they do, playing to the music rather than their own egos and so open to the moment. That’s the heart of the ‘jazz’ in Ronin Arkestra - being wide open to the moment and letting the music happen as it wants to.” says de Clive-Lowe.

Saqqara is the clearest example yet of Matthew Gordon's deep broken-beat knowledge and influences. As soulful as ever, with sparkling synthesiser stabs and a bass line covered in funk but deeply melodic at the same time, the track is quietly joyful.  

Pie Eye Collective is the solo project of sound scientist and explorer Matthew Gordon. 

Pie Eye Collective, while at its heart electronica, creates an organic collage of influences and evocative noises, even drawing from jazz and soul music. Time signatures, sometimes hard to pin down, only lead to a more hypnotic sense of being afloat in a sea of harmonics and strangely familiar musical memories. 

It is music that wants you to completely free yourself and let it roll over you.

Dennis Brown was born on 1 February 1957 at Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. His father Arthur was a scriptwriter, actor, and journalist, and he grew up in a large tenement yard between North Street and King Street in Kingston with his parents, three elder brothers and a sister, although his mother died in the 1960s. He began his singing career at the age of nine, while still at junior school, with an end-of-term concert the first time he performed in public, although he had been keen on music from an even earlier age, and as a youngster was a keen fan of American balladeers such as Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. He cited Nat King Cole as one of his greatest early influences. He regularly hung around JJ's record store on Orange Street in the rocksteady era and his relatives and neighbours would often throw Brown pennies to hear him sing in their yard. Brown's first professional appearance came at the age of eleven, when he visited a local club where his brother Basil was performing a comedy routine, and where he made a guest appearance with the club's resident group, the Fabulous Falcons (a group that included Cynthia Richards, David "Scotty" Scott, and Noel Brown). On the strength of this performance he was asked to join the group as a featured vocalist. When the group performed at a JLP conference at the National Arena, Brown sang two songs - Desmond Dekker's "Unity" and Johnnie Taylor's "Ain't That Loving You" - and after the audience showered the stage with money, he was able to buy his first suit with the proceeds.[4] Bandleader Byron Lee performed on the same bill, and was sufficiently impressed with Brown to book him to perform on package shows featuring visiting US artists, where he was billed as the "Boy Wonder".

As a young singer Brown was influenced by older contemporaries such as Delroy Wilson (whom he later cited as the single greatest influence on his style of singing), Errol Dunkley, John Holt, Ken Boothe, and Bob Andy.[4] Brown's first recording was an original song called "Lips of Wine" for producer Derrick Harriott, but when this was not released, he recorded for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label, and his first session yielded the single "No Man is an Island", recorded when Brown was aged twelve and released in late 1969. The single received steadily increasing airplay for almost a year before becoming a huge hit throughout Jamaica. Brown recorded up to a dozen sessions for Dodd, amounting to around thirty songs, and also worked as a backing singer on sessions by other artists, including providing harmonies along with Horace Andy and Larry Marshall on Alton Ellis's Sunday Coming album. Brown was advised by fellow Studio One artist Ellis to learn guitar to help with his songwriting, and after convincing Dodd to buy him an instrument, was taught the basics by Ellis. These Studio One recordings were collected on two albums, No Man is an Island and If I Follow my Heart (the title track penned by Alton Ellis), although Brown had left Studio One before either was released. He went on to record for several producers including Lloyd Daley ("Baby Don't Do It" and "Things in Life"), Prince Buster ("One Day Soon" and "If I Had the World"), and Phil Pratt ("Black Magic Woman", "Let Love In", and "What About the Half"), before returning to work with Derrick Harriott, recording a string of popular singles including "Silhouettes", "Concentration", "He Can't Spell", and "Musical Heatwave", with the pick of these tracks collected on the Super Reggae and Soul Hits album in 1973. Brown also recorded for Vincent "Randy" Chin ("Cheater"), Dennis Alcapone ("I Was Lonely"), and Herman Chin Loy ("It's Too Late" and "Song My Mother Used to Sing") among others, with Brown still at school at this stage of his career

Turning Honeyfeet’s latest opus into a straight up soulful disco monster by ‘Hot Toddy’ and ‘Ron Basejam’, with Rioghnach’s rasping vocals playfully meandering over crisp beats and trademark live bass.

South London producer Aeshim readies another four pack of beats and melodies created on his treasured Juno 6 synthesizer! As with his debut "One Week Peak", Aeshim challenged himself to produce each of the tracks on "Two Times Four" in a limited amount of hours. 

'Hot Scissors' has an all-around playful sound and feels that although made in a time-crunch was still a blast to create. It gives a nod to the mentality of today's style of Bruk - uplifting keys and chords overtop of in-the-gut low end bass and rhythms, and would probably fit within a Broken set. 

The new EP "Two Times Four" is out in October, but for now enjoy 'Hot Scissors'!

Glass Army is way more direct, bringing grouchy beats and bass up to a euphoric disco/house jam before delivering an emotional final punch. 

Hear Me Calling is 808 gospel music, still nodding at the duo’s broken beat influences. Big, bass heavy, uplifting dance music. 

The rest of the EP continues to deliver the bizarre twists and turns, and sense of humour we’ve come to expect from the South London pair. Bumpy, atmospheric, spacious and jazz influenced in equal measures.

Having released the album Kalba to huge critical acclaim, Wah Wah 45s are now ready to unleash the next stage of this unique cross-continental project, fronted by Ghanain xylophonist Isaac Birituro and Leeds based sing-songwriter and Grammy nominated producer Sonny Johns, AKA The Rail Abandon. Their debut album caused something of a stir this year, with Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews and many more showing it the love it deserves. Even though the album has plenty of club friendly moments, the label decided to let some of their favourite producers give you their own interpretations of this landmark album for Wah Wah 45s.
