My submission for the Disquiet Junto Project 0595: Filter Progression assignment:

"Step 1: Choose a static sound, such as a field recording of a specific place, or a held tone, or a recording of noise.

Step 2: Experiment with animating the static sound selected from Step 1 by slowly, subtly, manually modulating it, using only filter frequency and resonance."

I took a field recording of cicadas that I captured near Ojochal, Costa Rica in January 2023. I processed the recording with the Norns script OOOOOO, An Elta Music PF-3 Polivoks Filter, and a Bastl Ikarie filter modulated slowly, by hand, and recorded in one take with no overdubs.

Process:

I captured a field recording of cicadas near Ojochal, Costa Rica in January 2023. I took that recording and recorded different chunks of it into 3 loops on the OOOOOO Norns script. I pitched one of them down to -12.5%, one to 12.5% and one at 50% speed so that they made a kind of pad or chord. I passed the signal through a Meng Qi Wingie 2 in polyphonic mode with a very small amount of the resonator coming through, then into the Elta Music PF-3 Polivoks Filter in stereo bandpass mode, and finally into the Bastl Ikarie with a good amount of gain and the envelope follower on “fast” mode. I played the Polivoks cutoff and resonance, the mod depth, spread control, cutoff, and resonance on the Ikarie.
