This mix complies of different types of music I edited and sounds I experimented with for this program, inspired by the story of Middle East and responding to Etel Adnan’s poem sent by you. The poem in this mix is read by Lama Abo Chuqeir.

SSS presents an online radio programme in collaboration with SACF, London's Syrian Arts and Culture Festival.

The programme features 18 mixes produced by Syrian DJ's, collectors, producers and researchers in response to a poem by Etel Adnan.These were broadcasted online on Radio Alhara and Root Radio.

Excerpt from: "Night" by Etel Adnan in English and translated into Arabic:

I am a night bird. I search in barely visible corners the pencils, erasers, and writing slates of my early years…
I continue to hug walls. This hour is tired of dealing with ancestors. Many things are receding along with the seasons, and the sun has set, that was just there

Damascus Underground Session Featuring Walashi

In collaboration with Sadaa Sound Syndicate, we're honoured to present Sawt Syria: an exploration of club & underground music culture in Syria and its exilic diaspora in Europe. Captured in the summer of 2022, this two-part project showcases, for the first time ever, the most compelling Syrian DJs & producers of contemporary culture, shaabi sounds & rap.

This first segment – 'Motherland', shot in Damascus – presents a 6-hour broadcast accompanied by a video-essay that roots deeper into these artists’ worlds & practices in music-making & organising. 

"Sawt Syria {'sawt' meaning sound} is a meditation on the Syrian condition forged in over a decade of still ongoing war and dispersion, of the abjection and joy that shape that condition and the place of music in reckoning and striving for life. It was conceived & produced by Syrians for Syrians with editorial help from Sadaa Sound Syndicate – a cross-border group of self-organized Syrians who are attuned to the agential possibilities of sound. Since its inception, this project has been difficult to put out into a world where genocide is ongoing in Palestine and where turmoil persists in Syria and the region. Our work today and everyday is geared towards a Syria that is ours and a Free Palestine." – Sadaa Sound Syndicate
