Deep in the Underbelly

The Barony A Frame honours four miners who died in the disaster of 1962.

The winding gear slid into the pit trapping men underneath. When the first collapse took place two miners, Henry Green and George Wade, were trapped. After the second collapse, Thomas Fyvie and John MacNeil were enlisted from Kilmarnock to help clear the pit. After the third collapse all four men were killed. Their bodies were never recovered from the mine and the A Frame stands as a monument to these men.

Strikes were part of the struggle for improved pay and conditions for miners. At the Barony pit, safety was a constant issue, in particular with regard to water in the mine.
