On August 28, 1963, during Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (best known as the forum for MLK's "I Have Dream" speech), the only white speaker, UAW President Walter P. Reuther, took the podium at the Lincoln Memorial to deliver a seven minute speech in solidarity with King regarding equality and linking the goals of the civil rights and labor movements under the umbrella of economic justice.
“Fellow Americans and Friends,” Reuther said, “I am here today with you because with you I share the view that the struggle for civil rights and the struggle for equal opportunity is not the struggle of Negro-Americans but the struggle of every American...And we need to join together, to march together, and work together, until we've bridged the moral gap between American democracy's noble promises and its ugly practices in the field of civil rights...”

The Wheeling Academy of Law and Science Foundation (WALS Foundation) is a non-profit established in 2004 to promote educational programming and consulting in the areas of education, employment, energy, the environment, and local history and preservation; and, in doing so, to promote local economic opportunity, employment, and job creation in the city of Wheeling and state of West Virginia. The WALS Foundation is based out of the historic First State Capitol of West Virginia. This building served as the first state capitol of West Virginia from the inception of the state on June 20, 1863 to April 1, 1870, and also from May 23, 1875 to December 4, 1876. The building is located on the corner of 15th and Eoff in Wheeling, WV.
