First recorded set. First full set. Third time on the decks. Track list chosen, cues set, no prior practice. Just flowed with it. And continued to play around throughout. Best to just jump in right?

Still learning how to mix in tracks, so some parts are a bit shoddy and by the end, my mixing style had shifted quite a bit.
Looking for feedback on all fronts, as well as general thoughts and insights of the set.

Opening first track - Kala
‘Kala’ is sanskrit for time. Commonly recognised in the mandala ‘Kalachakra,’ The “Wheel of Time” in Tibetan Buddhism.
I am a sucker for synchronicities as is the next person, but for this part to hit, you need to know that I have no idea about track names or artist names. I hear a song i like, its shazammed, placed in appropriate folder and thats it. I will have already forgotten the name by the time i exit spotify. It wasnt until choosing the first track for the set that I noticed the name of this track as Kala. This name is particularly relevant to me. (Side story: Ive been working on writing a novel. I love storytelling and worldbuilding and i have a grand idea for a trilogy series). Anyway, about 3 years ago, I was at a point of finding a name for the main character and Kala Ren is what I whipped up (Came from Kylo, as in Kylo Ren from Star Wars). And so that was the obvious choice for my first track. Then as I worked through setting the appropriate key pathways, i ended up with a few options and lo and behold what was the title of one of them? 

Closing final track - Time
The Kala connection clicked and it all just worked out and wrapped up so well. In a nice little bow. Starting and ending with time. Something that I never felt like I had. Not enough of it to be able to explore music in the way I wanted. Not in this lifetime. Or so I had thought. My perception of what time means is shifting. If I can achieve this in the little time I had and also still have been present through it all, no matter what the experience or how short the experience, it will have been worth it. Time is indeed a construct. So lets construct it into a form that can be forever cherished. For us in the moment, and for us in the memory.

Tree House_26.10.24-Training Set I

These sets are there for me to use as learning material, as well as for anyone who wants to track my progress. And of course, to get as much feedback as possible so please have a listen and go ham on the critique.

The start of this set begins with a track called Sea. Very apt given my background of biological studies and marine science. There are also a few tracks with titles of “Home.” Very relevant for the time of me literally moving home. The set is filled with light and uplifting tracks. Fast and upbeat dancey anthem bangers. Lots of vocals that border on cheese. Just barely. It has very mainstage vibes. Unintentionally so, but a happy accident.

While the first set was meticulously curated and flowed fairly seemlessly in putting it together with very little changes. This next set was done with the rest of my purchased tracks. In that first set, I used 25 of the 63 tracks I had, so surely there was enough there to make a second set without duplicate tracks. Right? Right? Oh John. Naive, ignorant and cocky John. 
This set follows the same play style as the first, where the setlist was put together following the Camelot pathway and with no mixing practice. A choice I’d made for not just the challenge, but also to turn the set into a training experience where the capacity to learn is condensed. Forcing me to really turn on my focus and bring attention to the areas that slip up and/or require more work. Plus, playing in this way also keeps the mystery alive for myself because playing with filters and altering the track and hearing it for the first time is hella fun and exciting. Given I had around 40 tracks to work with, I found myself cornered and had to really play around with the ordering of tracks to keep in line with the Camelot wheel. Perhaps too strict. There was a lot of second-guessing and wondering whether certain transitions of tracks would work, or whether the energy levels followed through smoothly. But……. I went with it anyway. All would be a learning experience in the end.

During the set, I made lots of mistakes. My mixing was very rough from the many tracks with vocals. Getting the timings right with these tracks was hard. When to bring in, when to take out without voices clashing. For most of the set, I felt very rushed and that led to lots of silly mistakes (not bringing master volume down when cueing). Another issue I had was that for a few tracks, the bpm was not showing so having to manually tune the speed at same time as beatmatching was a real headfuck. A lot of these I know would easily be rectified if I’d just done a playthrough of it. In general though, I am pleased with how it went. Im happy with my track selection, had lots of fun with the filter fingerings and grateful with how much I learned on the spot and coming out of it.

Finding Home_15.12.24-Training Set II

The journey of this set takes you quickly into a high-powered, high-stakes game. Hitting you with fast-paced melodies, deep emotional vocals, and stimulations coming from all aural directions. This early onset of heaving tracks comes at a measured approach and thereafter surfs the frequency waves down, taking the leisurely path through the rest of the set. Nestle into the deep melodica and enjoy the scenic route Ive crafted together.

To put this set together, I needed more tracks. The limitations of planning the second set had me really noticing the unnecessary hurdles i’d placed for myself. Mostly just needed a bigger library to play with, rather than a limited supply to try make work. And so the next lot of tracks were bought from my shazaam catalogue. An extra 75 absolute bangers to add to the playing field. Once again, the set was curated following a Camelot wheel pathway, with no practice, and mixed for the first time on the day. I'm so glad that I chose to do these sets this way. Im really digging this method because the thrill of hearing it all for the first time with the audience has been captivating. 

This was the most fun i’ve had playing a set. The selection of the tracks had me feeling soo proud as I was playing them. The way they flowed into each other. Building upon each other. Easing through each other. I am my own harshest critic (as many artists and creatives are), and I remember thinking if I was on the other side of the decks I would be frothing so hard. There is a point in the set where there is a pretty big mistake (mis-press of a button), but somehow i rolled with it and turned it into something not half bad. Another proud moment of quick-thinking and flowing.

The focus of this set was centred around making an extended cooldown of tracks. Keeping the energy and vibe as stable as possible, with very little notice of the degression (descent). With this training set, I wanted to play around with building energy and managing energy with my track selections. Testing my skills with track placements, as well as paying more attention to the subtleties and watching out for interruptions of flow (more practice on my mixing and transitions; less filtering and effects; no lazing on the start-of-track reset habits).
My last recorded training set, so as usual lots of feedback please. At time of writing this, I have since played my first official gig a few weeks ago. Looking to record that one at some point too.

Thirty Four_15.02.2025-Training Set III

Set from my first booked gig. Event was 'Another World' @ My aeon. This was my first experience playing on a professional system and my lord was it a treat. Being able to feel the vibrations brought in another layer of experience. The decks looked like i was about to fly a plane, and got a surprise when i was told the lows was split in two. No idea that was a thing (obvious greenie), but after a couple tracks, managed to figure out what to do with them.

Warmed up the night for psy, so I went with some deep progressive house and rolled through to some faster paced trance tracks. The brief was to keep it cosmic, given the psytrance night so I stripped a lot of my tracks back and held off on the vocal-heavy stuff. As much as I could anyway. Still snuck in a few, but I reckon they fit the vibe well.

A deep melodic journey to engage listeners’ heart-mind connection with emotionality and tonal precision.
Wanderer is an artist that thrives on curating journey sets, where his flow finds its foundations with melody in electronic dance music. The history of self-taught singing, bedroom belting and obsession with vocal riffs/runs granted him an immeasurable love for note precision. The focus of his sets is in the weaving of melodic bases to take listeners through a carefully crafted sound voyage. Commonly leaning on bright, airy and uplifting sounds, but not shy from veering into the sharper and edgier tones. His sound places less agency on genres and is often wandering about in any given set. Through and in between the realms of deep house. With a common element of trance and always a route of progression. So long as the melodies hold.
His aim is to create a seamless melodic experience that culminates into a sonic story. Promoting deeper aural immersions and heightening clarity of thought within the mind temple.

The true name comes from the words ‘wander’ and ‘wonder.’ Two verbs that succinctly describe his journey through the music and arts sphere of Australia. An exploration made in solitude and in earnest, to study and understand this expansive culture. And finding his own stories of self-discovery in the process.
