Invasion
Previous Horizon
At the dawn of the 12th century, the Basque Country was a living frontier.
Álava, Gipuzkoa, and the Duranguesado stood as strategic territories of the Kingdom of Navarre, guardians of passes, mountains, and seas.
Castile and Navarre regarded each other with suspicion; their intermittent hostilities were like embers that never quite died out.

Conquest by Force
In the spring of 1199, Alfonso VIII of Castile decided to break the balance.
His banners were unfurled toward western Navarre, advancing with the force of a kingdom seeking expansion.
The village bells rang out as a warning... the invasion had begun.

Siege of Vitoria
Sancho VI of Navarre had founded the city just a few decades earlier, in 1181, with the name Nova Victoria.
There, on the hill, rose the most tenacious resistance.

In June 1199, the walls of Vitoria were besieged.

For eight months, the city resisted under the command of Martín Ttipia, a symbol of Basque dignity.

Hunger, cold, and constant pressure gradually weakened the defenders.

Finally, in January 1200, the city surrendered.

Result of the Invasion
With the fall of Vitoria, Castile consolidated its dominion over Álava, Gipuzkoa, and the Duranguesado region.
Navarre was weakened, deprived of its western access to the sea.
The border changed forever, and the political map shifted toward the Crown of Castile.

Resistance That Did Not Die
Although the walls fell, the will of the Basque provinces was not extinguished.

• Initial resistance... the local communities defended their strongholds with courage.

• Political resistance... after the conquest, the Assemblies and the fueros (charters of rights) became legal bastions.

• Basque regional autonomy... Castile accepted that Álava, Gipuzkoa, and Biscay could retain their own institutions, integrating without entirely losing their identity.

Memory and significance
This episode is etched in memory as a tension between Castilian military force and Basque resistance.

The conquest of 1199–1200 marked the beginning of Álava's political integration into Castile, but under a negotiated model.
The resistance transformed into a defense of their fueros (traditional laws and privileges) and autonomy, a legacy that survived for centuries.
Thus was born the historical singularity of the Basque provinces within the Crown... conquered, but never surrendered in spirit.
