I met Neil Popkin in an LA recording studio, during the Santa Ana wind months. I was 18 and was recording a song I'd written (comparing my anxiety disorder and teenage melancholy to THE NOTHING from "The Neverending Story") with my adopted older brother, Billy Mohler. Billy had the really creative and cool idea of bringing Neil (his 20 year old brother-in-law)into the session to circuit bend on our track with a toy casio keyboard. For those of you who aren't familiar with circuit bending, I just found this eloquent description for you on Wikipedia...

"Circuit bending is the creative, chance-based customization of the circuits within electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children's toys and digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators.
Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments."

Neil was an awesome ciruit bender, had the most impressive fanny-pack collection in the trunk of his Honda Accord station wagon, and our birthdays were within days of each other. We hit it off right away.

It was the early '00s, and we spent a lot of early morning hours in pre-gentrified Venice Beach listening to Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Autolux, and The Knife. I got two of my first *tiny* tattoos on the Venice Boardwalk, and we enjoyed just being kind of rebellious kids on the brink of an almost adulthood. We also mostly just drove around in his station wagon (fanny packs bouncing in the trunk) singing "Since You've Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson and "Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette on the top of our lungs. 

It turned out that Neil, along with being an excellent bender of circuits and fanny pack antiquarian, was a fantastic musician/songwriter/producer. 

Early one morning, in Neil's Venice Beach apartment, we laid down a moody track called "When I Give In." We both made the sounds, I wrote the words, and Neil produced it. 

We have been sitting on this song for twelve years and both decided the other day that it was time to set her free. We are working on a REAL and glossy version of this track to be released soon, but there's something kind of raw and magical about this basic demo that two children made.

It's like a time capsule into 2005 Los Angeles.

There is no record of these lyrics anywhere, so I absolutely can't tell you what words I'm singing.
