For me this is THE BEST period in Dance music.

These are a set of DJ mixes encoded from old cassette tapes which I originally recorded between 1991 and 1993 and sold through record shops or mail order back in the day. It’s a document from those great years as it happened and a record of the journey I was going through exploring and discovering the new music of the day, alternating between my two big influences of the the time, breakbeat hardcore and techno. 

It really is as it happened - tunes I was buying that week and unreleased promos I was being given. There’s even the odd tune I probably wouldn’t draw for now, plus amusingly at one point I play Renegade Soundwave - ‘Phantom’ on 45 (much to my retrospective shock!). But this was the era of Hardcore, it was fresh and different, there were no rules.

There’s no tracklistings. Some are obvious bangers and anthems of the time which you’ll know, some are not, and some are obscure releases which even I’m struggling to remember what they were. The mixes echo what I was playing on Pulse 90.6FM as well as at raves such as Helter Skelter, Labrynth, Slimetime, Knowledge, VFM and Eurobeat 2000.

Things kick off in the heyday of Dutch and Belgian Euro, inter-spliced with the UK Breakbeats of the time - think CJ Bolland, Altern-8, Tim Taylor. Then there’s a slew of 92 mixes that capture the fast pace changes in Hardcore’s golden year with too many names to mention, but as an example there’s labels like Moving Shadow, Reinforced, Rising High and producers like Nebula II, Guy Called Gerald, Doc Scott and so on. As the mixes move towards the end of 92, Techno starts creeping in, so there’s early Underground Resistance, Aphex Twin and lots of breakbeat stuff that was picking up on this sea change. With the 93 mixes, it’s the darker hardcore that was increasing in tempo (and post ‘Sesame Street’ pitched up vocals) acting as the pre-cursor of what would then become Jungle. The last mixes are predominantly Hard Techno and Gabba but tinged with Rave and Breakbeat, possibly not to everyone’s liking at this point but nonetheless a representation of another very vibrant strand of what was happening on the underground by late 93.

Quite impressed I had the foresight to record almost all of these onto metal cassette so given the technology, the recordings are not too bad. Unfortunately there’s a couple of moments of distortion on the early mixes, usually from two basslines in the mix but remember these were the days of mixers with no channel EQ or LED lights. And to be honest the mixes are by no means always perfect but nonetheless capture the moment. They’ve all been recorded as is, with no edits, all from take.

The complex, fast and techy rythms, underpinned with spheric synths are going to take you on a powerfull trip through bassmusics' borderlands. The intense breakbeat-roller "Trance Floor" opens the EP with a pressure building introduction, its raw spirit and jaw-dropping drum pattern, while "Chaos" compromises all these elements into a mercyless dancefloor weapon. Finally "Slow Dissolve", rich of beautifully crafted synthesis and undeniable vocal references, represents the even more profound aspects of these fruitfull experiments, balancing on the cutting edge of jungle breaks and bassheavy grime. The closing track "See?" rounds up GTEP03 with a deepdiving take on modern dubstep hybrids, cementing Brootworths reputation to skillfully deconstruct his musical influences, just to rebuild them in his undeniably unique approach to soundsystem-cultures' finest sounds and beyond. Supported by some of the most challenging selectors out there, like Mumdance, Dangermami, LCY, Bloomfeld and more, these tunes have already started to leave their imprint on dancefloors worldwide, and will for sure continue to do so! GTEP03 is out on Ghosttown Records on November 3rd.

The electric pulse of classic techno raves surges through our veins, and with Halloween just around the corner, we've got a track perfectly suited for the season.

Inspired by the chilling ambiance of the 1989 horror classic, "Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan," we find Jason Voorhees, a character nearly impossible to refuse. In 2023, Jason makes his way to Berghain, not for mayhem, but to make a unique request for his favorite tracks. Rumor has it that even in the famously strict Berghain, they don't usually take requests, but who could possibly say no to Jason? The ensuing hilarity is a spectacle in itself.

Adding to the excitement, we're thrilled to introduce Mani Festo, who arrives with a mesmerizing techno-breaks remix guaranteed to unleash sonic mayhem on any sound system it graces.

Croatian dj/producer Iggy Dope launched his record label with a versatile V/A compilation featuring 8th international and inter-generational talents from different corners of the genre spectrum and scenes (Italy, USA, Austria, Germany, UK).

The inaugural compilation by Etherwerkz is packed with high-vibrational bass-heavy club music from friends and faves, setting the tone for the Etherwerkz genre-free sound and vision, from etherial experiments heard in the intro by Weightausend, peak time tech-uk funky by Xen Chron, hi-tek hood electro from Soular-Dj Phiene and User Delusion, through bass bangers from Toupaz and Lindenberg Support wrapping it up with 160 bpm tekkerz by Johnny Megabyte and Dj Balance.

Control Freak co-founder Customer Service returns to the label with his second EP, Amygdala. As both a DJ and producer, Hong Kong-born, London-based Customer Service thrives in a genre-defying nether zone - rooted in familiar dancefloor grooves, but with a distinctive, off kilter sense of rhythm and melody that instantly mark his productions out.

With previous music supported from the likes of Ben UFO, upsammy & Oceanic, Tom Ravenscroft, Solid Blake, dBridge, re:ni and more, this record follows the thread of previous Customer Service releases, exploring deep, trippy and murky textures rooted in techno & electro soundscapes. Rounding off the record, @pugilistmusic remixes Lean Forward, adding a murky, broken groove to the detailed fabric of the original, and Customer Service collaborates with CF cofounder @finnaman on a similarly richly-textured closing track, Useless Knowledge.

PREMIERE: Customer Service - Lean Forward (Pugilist remix) (Control Freak Recordings)

W133 starts the year with a brand new release by Ulm’s producer Kid Kun. He delivers four hard-hitting techno/bass hybrids complemented by a remix from No Sir, who returns to the label after an appearance on W133001.

"Gaslight," the title-giving track of the EP, immediately sets the tone for the release. Dark atmospheres and sci-fi pads decorate the driving broken baseline and kick. After that, "Hypersonic," with a similar vibe but slightly more chill energy, grooves its way into your ears.
In the third position, we find the dancefloor smasher "Send Your Stuff Into A Modular System And Smile." It bursts with energy and pushes you forward with a distorted bass, hidden voices, and breaky drum patterns and will definitely make you smile. 
The last original track of the EP is "Inflict," another dark sub-frequency roller, this time with long melodic bassy pads and a spooky touch. 
On remix duties, No Sir delivers a playful interpretation of "Hypersonic," giving it some arpy high acid sounds with tripped-out rhythms!

The EP is available as a digital download, or can be ordered with a printed and signed artwork in A4 size. The photography for the artwork is by Freya Gerz.
