Back in the early 90's Mark started writing his own material and I started singing with him for fun. We didn’t have any money and wanted to record our songs and we heard of a new place in town that we could go to for free! The Warren. It was a hum of activity, with lots of different groups to engage in and get support. There was even a crèche so young mums weren’t excluded. Back then that was impressive. We could even get a hot meal!
I remember the small 16 track recording studio at The Warren. I was so in awe of it. It was amazing to be recording our music there. We were young and we had the world at our feet. It was exciting times. There was talk of an American tour. There was an offer of a record deal. But nothing happened. My brother suffered with Autism and struggled with depression. Back then Autism wasn’t ever talked about, there was a stigma with depression. Men had to toughen up, pull themselves together. Man up.
My brother took his own life at 33 years old. I sold all the equipment and threw all the music away. It was a painful reminder of our lives. This I regret now. The only thing I kept was the unfinished reels. Over the years I have looked at the reels and thought of finishing and releasing them but ended up in tears and buried them away again.
Last year I lost both my parents and after that I decided I had to finish what we had started. Get some closure. I sent them away, got them digitised and we booked a day at Young Thugs Studio with Nick Russell. I wanted to bring the tracks up to date and invited my son Tom and partner Lizzie to do a new vocal on Desire. Both of them have been involved with music at The Warren in the past.
Music for all of us started at The Warren and it is here that it should end. This is a tribute to him, to his music and to The Warren for making this happen.

13. 'Second Guessing' - The Cliques

Dandelion & Burdock is a song about my personal growth and how I have learned more about myself and where I stand than I ever thought I could. I have had most of my family and friends stand beside me and support me in my identity, although I have lost people along the way. This song describes my relationship with my dad and how growing older took away the rose-tinted glasses I saw him through. Musically, the song acts as the bridge between the style I preferred when I was younger and the style that fits best now. 
A quote that embodies my feeling for this song is ‘Growing up and seeing your parents’ flaws is like losing your religion, I don’t believe in God anymore. I don’t believe in my father either.’ Nicola Yoon, The Sun is Also a Star.

Trouser Dress - Dandelion And Burdock

Portrait is an ode to self-love that was forged in the darkness of losing who you are. Mina manifested herself a new life under the light of an August full moon, pretending she had every thing she wanted and being grateful for every detail of an imaginary future life. She wished to be successful, loved, adored, and wanted, most of all, to feel pretty. When she blew out the candle, the moon turned her wishes into her waking life. The ode to this manifestation magic has brought her dreams to light.

This EP is a culmination of the hard work we've put into our band over the past two years. Everything we've done has led to this moment and we're incredibly proud to finally be doing our first big release. When we first started out and wrote our very first song together, (which is the closing track), we never imagined the progress that we would have made whilst we've been in this band. Releasing this through Warren Records means a lot to us because we started out rehearsing in their practice rooms and some of these songs were formulated in there. For us it feels like closing the door on the first chapter of our musical career in multiple ways.

About the beauty, pain, and ungovernability of our memories- memories that can slip out of our grasp just as quickly as they were formed.

Lapsing - Ephemeral

This song is a tale of the 'Daffodil Girl' who is portrayed as an extremely beautiful but rather narcissistic character and someone who, out of jealousy and potentially rejection, is intending to brutally murder her. The song works through this in chronological order, leaving her 'face down in a ditch' towards the end of the song. It has both the message that the concept of 'pretty privilege' is not always as it seems and that some people out there have messed up ideas of emotional retaliation.

P&B - Two Trains And A Taxi Away

This song is inspired by mine and Endoflevelbaddie's shared hatred of this new habit that people have of filming entire live performances on their phones. 
I've paid good money to see a live act that I adore and often I've been waiting in anticipation for that show to come round too, the last thing I want to do is view it through people's phone screens or watch others fail and just drunkenly film the back of the head of the person in front of them.
I love the feeling of being present at a gig and feeling that connection between yourself and the artists on stage, I just think that getting your phone out for a long period of time is poor gig etiquette…and I’m short so that doesn’t help!
Obviously, (and hypocritically as performers) there are also positives to this, bands need footage of themselves performing live so that they can show other people that they're actually pretty good, or to capture fond memories or to post on their socials to get more gigs. The same goes for gig-goers too.
In short, I don't wanna see ya phone- I just wanna watch the band!


Jodie Langford - Put It Down

This track encapsulates the endless times I have been haunted by sleep paralysis. I've often woken up to a lifeless body, unable to move, speak or scream combined with the sensation that something horrible and otherworldly is lurking over me.
On occasions the room has turned blood red and I've felt like I've been dragged down the side of my bed. Or, I've seen shadow-like figures in the crevices of my room.
When it happens I feel this force trying to pull me back into a slumber, however I fear that if I fall back to sleep I will die and so I just try to keep calm and stay awake.
Sometimes I have to get into bed with my mum because of how terrified I am, which is a bit embarrassing to admit to at 25 years old...

Bowling (title inspired by Anne Boleyn) is about misogyny. It’s inspired by the intense hatred some people feel towards women & how people wish to silence us, shame us, vilify us or wish us dead. The track also comments on how women are often viewed as having an expiry date. Why is it that when women age, change their appearance or don’t fulfil society’s standards of beauty, they’re classed as undesirable?

This track was birthed through gossip about cringe statements some people put in tinder bios and the contradicting expectations put on women. From sexist values and concepts to performative feminist conversation fillers, You've Got Male! is a playful tune that mocks stupid things we've heard come out of men's mouths when talking about women.

Killer Sinner - The Talks

Warren Records is a label run by the Music Team at the Warren Youth Project in Hull. 

The label was set up on the back of our appearance on Channel 4's Secret Millionaire in which the amazing Martin Stamp gave us the money to help support our studio and start a label to promote the amazing young musicians we work with. 

Warren Records is now well established with a number of releases under our belt, all of which we are very proud to be a part of. In Hull Warren Records has become a major part of the local music infrastructure and is now seen as a hub for music in and around the city. We act as a direct link to the all amazing and ever growing talent in our area and urge anybody to make contact with us and the artists we work with.
