Blues harmonica master JD Wilkes and his wife Jessica have revamped their rootsy band The Dirt Daubers by “going electric.” 
 
Wilkes insists that “plugging in” is no sin, and true fans will agree.  In fact, fans of CCR, The Black Keys, X, and the Blasters are bound to appreciate the band’s new swampy rock ‘n roll and classic R&B sound. 
 
With smoky, baritone sax grooves provided by Tom Waits’ sideman Ralph Carney and piano played by Wilkes himself, the band delves deeper into the bluesy recesses of American music.  Jessica Wilkes emotes pained lyrics about life, love and loss on tunes like “No More My Love” and “Apples and Oranges, while J.D. continues his southern storytelling style on “Angel Crown” and the title track “Wild Moon”.
 
Meanwhile, Atlanta-based band mates Rod Hamdallah and Preston Corn lay down a tasteful yet hard-driving guitar-and-drums combination.  In fact, twenty-three year old Hamdallah is poised to become one of the great, soulful guitarists of his Millennial Generation.  St. Louis sax-player, Kelly Everett, joins in the fray as well.
 
Yes, it’s a far cry from the Dirt Daubers’ previous string-band incarnation, but followers will be relieved to hear surviving elements of melody, lyrical wit and sass.  The band might have come “down from the mountain” (only to land square in the Mississippi Delta!) but the heart and soul of the Dirt Daubers remain in tact.
 
That said, “Wild Moon” marks a true sea change for Wilkes, as he combines forces with the feminine foil to his “gothic preacher” persona.  The results are dramatic and drenched in an ethos all their own. 
 
It’s dark.  It’s deadly.  It’s sultry and even cinematic.  For JD and Jessica Wilkes it’s a match made only in the light of a “Wild Moon.”
