As a DJ, Andy Carthy aka Mr. Scruff plays across the board, flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. His cartoon drawings illustrate gig flyers, record sleeves and CD covers, and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals.

Carthy’s first encounter with mixing was as a 12 year old in late 1984, when a friend played him some of his uncle's electro records, notably the StreetsoundsLP Crucial Electro Volume 1, opening his eyes and ears to the art of mixing records. Soon after he was constructing his own crude pause-button mixtapes, inspired by the electro compilations and various radio shows on stations such as Piccadilly, Radio Lancashire & Southside that exposed him to electro and hip-hop, soul, reggae and early house music. Shouts to John Peel (of course),Greg Wilson, Robbie Vincent, Richard Searling, Stu Allan, Lee Browne, Ranking Miss P, Scotty, Tony the Greek, Steve Barker, Gary Hickson, Sam Brown & Waxmaster.

Little by little Andy was building a collection fuelled by this knowledge, all the while improving his DJ skills. By 1987 he was proficient at turntable mixing and editing, although he was still using primitive home hi-fi gear. His first break came in 1994, when he met Barney Doodlebug, a DJ/Doodler who gave him his first Manchester gig, on a Sunday night in a venue called Dry Bar. He also passed on a demo tape to local label Rob's Records, which resulted in them releasing the first Mr. Scruff 12" single.

A regular on the Manchester scene through ’94-’95, he released a string of 12”s on Rob's Records subsidiary Pleasure, as well as sides for Echo Drop, Grand Central & Cup of Tea. His work for Grand Central with Mark Rae inspired some four-deck club performances, including friendly “battles” with DJ Food, which introduced him to the Ninja Tune fold.

Gigging across the UK (with Electric Chair, Off Centre, Fat City and Tru Thoughts) and Europe (with Grand Central), Mr. Scruff signed to Ninja Tune in 1998. His debut album Keep It Unreal arrived a year later, featuring the certified classic "Get A Move On", kick-starting his Manchester club night of the same name, borne of a desire to play exactly what he wanted, rather than having to fit in with the music policies of other club nights.

These were the beginnings of his famed “all-night-long” DJ sets cheerfully spanning blues, jazz, soul, funk, 60s R&B, disco, boogie, deep house, reggae, ska, rocksteady, dancehall, electronica, electro, hip hop, African, Latin, drum & bass, breakbeat… and bolstered his standing as a passionate, digger, collector and, above all, an unrivalled selector of the good stuff.

Trouser Jazz (2002); the epic mix CD Keep It Solid Steel (2004); and Ninja Tuna (2008) cemented Scruff’s rep as a premium freaker of frequencies, the latter featuring collaborations with the likes of Quantic, Danny Breaks, Alice Russell, Andreya Triana, Pete Simpson, Kaidi Tatham and Roots Manuva.

A fistful of EPs and singles populated 2009-2013 including Wobble Control(2011), Feel It / Bounce (2011) and Be The Music (2012).

In 2010 Big Chill Festival invited Mr. Scruff to host his own tent, testament to his inimitable raw dancefloor magnetism as are his regularly rammed-to-the-rafters Keep It Unreal sessions at Band On The Wall (Manchester) and KOKO (London).

After receiving a mighty nudge by the giant elbow of Ninja, the majority of 2013 was spent in the studio recording new album Friendly Bacteria, featuring Denis Jones, Matthew Halsall, Phil France, Vanessa Freeman & Robert Owens.

Hong Kong-born, Brighton-based producer Flavia Aliverti aka Foreign Skin is an audio-visual dreamboat. Manipulating the vocals of talented friends over warm synths, her sample-based ambient adventures never fail to capture our attention. With inspiration taken from the likes of Bonobo, Bjork and Purity Ring, music comes to Fla in sudden surges of creativity that often manifests itself in ethereal remixes for artists like Fickle Friends and Sun Glitters. Self-produced soaring, hypnotic visuals accompany her performance and make for a completely enchanting live show. Fresh from supporting Tei Shi, and ahead of her set tonight at Don Julio’s La Cantina Primavera, ease your mind with Foreign Skin’s Slumber Session.

Slumber Session: Foreign Skin

The best slumber sessions do more than just let your mind wander, they take you away to another place entirely. This one does just that. Currently counting down the days until the release of Berlin collective Average Negative’s wondrous debut vinyl LP and art book, Shadow Mountain, we’re stoked to have a mix from the project’s Sydney-based synth-pop wizard Marco Vella. Slicker than your average snoozy slumber session, his mix sets your imagination free. It is a wild camping adventure that fast-forwards through time and lets you watch as day turns to night and lush green mountain forests alive with the sounds of panpipes and flutes turn into unexplored moonlit lands littered with cicadas. Things take a turn for the industrial as the daydreamers stumble on a secret government base and inadvertently involve themselves in some real sci-fi sounding shit before – as often happens in dreams – all danger melts away to the sounds of funky psychedelic bass-slapping. “I wanted to make a mix that showcased emerging artists from around the globe that have been an inspiration to my music and myself,” explains the Sydney producer. “I also added a few tracks from the archives that were a major influence to me at the time of recording Shadow Mountain. I hope this mix doesn’t bring on the z’s, but is ‘slumber’ enough to help you kick back and blow the froth off a couple.” Mission accomplished. This week’s Slumber Session comes from someone who’s name is not only perfectly fitting but who’s hazy dreamlike music had is in such trance we knew there was no way we could pass up the opportunity to have her grace the slumber session series.

Dreamboy is the audiovisual project of the Canadian musician and singer/songwriter Esther Isabel Munits. The lady of many talents moved to Montréal in 2012 and quickly teamed up with producer Ben Borden (Solar Year) to work on her debut EP Negative Feelings and now after a tour assets up for her follow up EP, Endings. The release is a deep blend of country, gospel, hip hop and jungle influences that come together so form a wavey cut that we can’t get enough of.

The Beat Broker began producing/DJing in San Francisco in 2000 as part of the duo   Broker/Dealer which released singles for Traum, Spectral Sound (Ghostly) and Asphodel. Later venturing off on solo productions and into the cosmic disco edit/remixes genres which later turned into demos and released on labels such as Bear Funk, @flexx-records, @adultcontemporary and @sentrall. The Beat Broker also has been running the website @the-dream-chimney, a community that has been a long standing source for daily musical recommendations and more recently known for its weekly guest DJ mixes.

What the future holds? Or what projects you're possibly working on, future releases, etc.

I'll have some new tracks out on @sentrall later this year as well as 4 track @aordisco2 edits record coming out soon on @universalcave. More on @americanstandardrecords as well as a brand new track out soon on the label Public Release (@eug) from SF. Also trying to finish up some tracks for a Bear Funk follow up album.

Your favorite tracks/releases at the moment?

All the ones in this mix! Also including the entire new @body-san album. I've been listening to "Future Disc" by Sasac (@ultraultra) and "The Colours of Life" by @cfcf albums often right now too. All latest releases on @aficionado-recordings and @antinote-records are on repeat. 

And your favorite city and possibly a place in that city (club, park, restaurant, etc.) and why ?

I don't get out of SF too much since I've moved here in 98, so it has to be my favorite by default, but to make this more interesting I'll say Ogden, Utah since I just got back from there playing at the beautiful Fort Buenaventura Park. Had an awesome breakfast at Karen's Out West Cafe.
