MRZ – Nłabb'debb

In January 2025, in an unstable world increasingly dominated by very conservative and right-wing extremist forces, MRZ created his new EP “Nłabb'debb” in his basement studio beneath the surface of tranquil Zurich.

MRZ has been an active part of the local subcultural movement for decades. However, he is not one for big words, preferring to express his feelings and thoughts through music. And so this EP can certainly be understood as a soundtrack to resistance.

The five tracks pack a punch, are scratchy and bristly, twist and turn against convention, but at the same time convey a sense of positivity and lightness. Sometimes they cry out for change and rebellion, sometimes they inspire dreams and yearn for harmony, or they exude confidence and a belief in humanistic values.

The opener ‘Nłabb'debb’ comes in the best minimal house tradition, where whirled loops meet snappy hi-hats.

‘alm dauun’ is an unmistakable MRZ track – slightly dreamy, with filtered harmonies and shuffled beats.

“n'te'hhh”, on the other hand, is a multicultural, urban rumble that, with its energy, would be perfect as the soundtrack to a riot.

In ‘diudiudiu wuooai’, you can't help but feel the light of a delicate dawn brightening your mood after a night of dancing.

‘fwrou'uuu'tgtgtg’, with its jagged rhythms, feels like a futuristic vision that defies escapism and could be a musical counterpoint to Project 2025.

SMØR&BRØD – Ørigins
Release number 14 is a double premiere: it is the first Waswotsch release to appear on vinyl,
and the first release by SMØR&BRØD ever.
The talented Geneva-based sound activist, co-founder of the BASSMENT! sound system and
member of the ADSR collective, takes us on a hypnotic journey into the faster realms of
techno. The raw, energetic tracks he coaxes out of his drum machines and synths have a
unique, fresh and positive drive.
You can clearly hear that there is a live act at work here, who has his roots in the sound
system culture. The 4 tracks are the result of studio jams and mixed in the Jamaican dub
tradition. SMØR&BRØD's love of machines and effects, playing with the unpredictable and
happy coincidences has finally led to this extraordinarily lively and surprising EP
The opener ‘Portacabin’ on the A-side is a playful sawtooth filter elegy with delicately woven
metallic percussion elements that open up a slightly melancholic space.
A2 ‘Parallel Ballad’ is a hypnotic, lively, cheeky canon that shakes you awake with syncopated
beats.
On the flipside, ‘Urban Drive’ comes with exuberant energy, creaky acid basslines and 80s-
inspired, discoid synth waves.
The EP closes with the nasty ‘First Place’, which will tie your head and legs in a knot if you're
not careful…
We're delighted!

For the new Waswotsch issue, we were able to convince our friend from the Zurich mountains to share two of his treasures—Ron Rüegg, aka Rjega, has been a busy and nerdy producer and live act for two decades. He also shares his deep knowledge of audio production and synths as a teacher and mentor.
The Champagne Glow EP is an excellently crafted 2-tracker with the title track "Champagne Glow", a finely balanced dancefloor groover in which Rjega's love for early UK rave sound is audible. "Tremble" is a light and delicate track that can be located somewhere in the deep house universe.
A fascinating EP that will get you through the dark winter months healthy and happy.

‘Local Lifeforms’, Michal Ho’s new EP, features three tracks from the artist’s current live set.
The experimental and polymetric opener ‘Quaomibass’ references Michal’s drum ’n’ bass alter ego, Mijatoho.
'Dopeboogie' is naughty, glitchy bassline house, fit for the club.
'Local Lifeform' is a swinging, latin and jazz-infused groover veering off on an extraterrestrial tangent.

Local Lifeforms

Zurich’s very own techno veteran and innovator, Styro2000, is behind the next release on Waswotsch. His new EP oscillates between his beloved FM sounds and Dadaist experiments.
Styro really shouldn’t need any introduction by now: from the late 80s to the present day, he has been an indispensable fixture on the local scene as a tireless underground DJ, organiser of the Lethargy Festival and as part of the brilliant techno live act “die galoppierende Zuversicht”.
Thanks to his technical background, he’s Zurich’s go-to repairman for faulty synths and regularly supports international artists with his electrical engineering and programming skills. He’s also the founder, CEO and CTO of his software company, Uglyplugs.
-----
The opener, Deklean, is a minimalist FM stomper typical of Styro, which, in its universal style, can be played anywhere – from peak-time main floor to trippy after-hours sessions.
-----
‘Rane PI 14 Service Manual’ continues in this vein, even as the first Dadaist notes appear right on cue for the break.
-----
‘Wrongcubator’ is a rubbery, springy groover, peppered with surprising, surreal sounds, with which a perfect balance between body and mind can be achieved.
-----
The closing track, ‘Audioautist’, must definitely be attributed to the Dada art movement, where Styro himself offers a rare glimpse into his vocal universe, reminiscent of David Byrne of the Talking Heads – and you find yourself thinking: perhaps a pop star has been lost here.

Waswotsch Coming Out II

After a short quarantine/interruption/broadcast break/corona retreat/advertising break we enter the second round and musically expand our range.

Things get elegiac at the blue hour, with an oldskool ballad for Greta by Idealist & Andaloop, although it's not quite clear to us whether we're dancing indoors or outdoors, towards the sunset or dawn.

Inside, we are greeted joyfully by Kaufmann, who is just now spinning the funky minimal groover Rocket Man, winding upwards towards soulful heights in a mini-break.

When you get to the big junction, 'Kanda Masta' kicks in. The streets get wider, the traffic gets thicker, and you pick up the pace. As you ride, you take in the glass and concrete buildings around you. As you get closer to the city centre, the neon lights are really starting to come alive.

KFM live - Palaver - 03 Kanda Masta

The EP kicks off with the track that gives it its name, 'Palaver'. Just picture this: you're riding your lowrider bike from your neighbourhood towards the city centre. You sit down on the comfortable saddle and put on your headphones. With a great, laid-back beat, a tasty bassline and some great percussion and sound effects, you ride through a park past loads of people chatting.

With 'Blogdahl', you leave the green park and head into a slightly sloping neighbourhood street. The beat speeds up a bit, you change gear and pass snack bars from all over the world and small shops.
