Tacitus was using the Anglo Saxons as Rousseau used the noble savage to decry the morals of romans.  It's also not true that all white people benefited from slavery, in fact just the opposite.  Appian and Polybius describe how the free born get displaced and replaced by the slaves brought home from winning wars.  The fact is slavery was a human universal until the British Empire abolished the trade.  If Dr. Douglas wants to give credit to (some) white people for inventing freedom, we could all move forward claiming the rights of englishmen.  Claiming white history:  I would say the period of segregation prevented black americans from receiving their share of the New Deal and the GI Bill, federal programs that created the middle class.  The net assets of whites is $112,000, that of blacks $8,000.  So how is asset inflation via the Fed prosperity for all?  Don't scapegoat, unite.
