Lychee (@lycheefrut) & I had a lovely time joining May's Nowadays Nonstop with an extended back-to-back, and I'm glad we're able to revisit the moment.

We wanted this set to be as fun as possible while distinctly ourselves, and I love that you can hear a bit of both of us in the recording, dancing side-by-side in one of our favorite venues and building steadily toward a euphoria of our own.

Lychee at Nowadays Nonstop ⋆⁺₊⋆ March 2023, 1 - 4 am

Based in NYC, and with a background as a DJ, writer, and event organizer, Lychee's (@lycheefrut) underground energy is evident in every set they craft. With regular appearances at Basement, Nowadays, and Bossa Nova Civic Club, Lychee also runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series and occasional event platform, and the label Unimatrix Zero, as well as serving on the board for the Aslice Foundation.

Drawing inspiration from recent musical explorations at Nowadays in NYC in particular, Lychee's Patterns of Perception 116 showcases a return to their musical foundations in hypnotic, dubby, wormholey techno. Embracing a more focused, classic feel than many of their recent dancefloor explorations, this mix infuses a sense of narrative and evolution, effortlessly blending darkness and light, corporeality and sentimentality.

Lychee is the vibrant force behind Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series that delves into the transformative power of dancefloors. A fixture in New York's underground scene, Lychee's DJ sets blend technoid psychedelia with meaningful exploration, lighting up venues like Basement, Nowadays, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Coinciding with her tenth Late Music LP, Sarah Davachi sends us a centuries-spanning selection of music with her mix for Bleep. As with her similarly eclectic NTS show Le Jardin, these tracks feed into Davachi’s wide repertoire of compositions and performances, be the long-form explorations of enchanting lute plucks and bleeding string drones, or enrapturing opera and lush, intertwining braids of baroque-styled folk-rock melodies. Highlights include the mesmerising vortex of swirling brass and electronics from Terry Riley, the “ancient church singing” of Ukrainian Sretenye Ensemble that completely stops you in your tracks, and the labyrinthine guitar licks of Frank Zappa.

Bleep Mix #287 - Sarah Davachi

@syberkid creates a journey through the flames, leaving us with the burning embers of an eclectic mix of drone and ambient harmony. This was recorded live at the ‘Burning of The Clavie’ at MKII in London, on January 11th 2025.

This artwork is a collaboration between Sybil, Adam, and Mark, creating cymatics of sonic experimentation, and with each installment of the series, we will explore turning a fraction of sound into light. 🎨

Pjenne is at the forefront of the Aussie underground scene, a true visionary! Her sound takes many forms and genres but she crafted a unique style that is very much of her own. If you haven’t already listened to her beautifully curated radio show/mix series Passing Notes we highly recommend.  

 “This mix is a live recording of (most of) my set at @terra-obscura-london in London in April last year. I played from 12-2am after Slowfoam and before Oma Totem Live - a time in the night where Ormside projects was transformed from 'soft furnishings' to club. I think the mix represents the music I played a lot across my tour last year (and probably won't stop playing), with an additional emotional sprinkle that was inspired by the work of @avsluta and @aliciasteanson. <3”

wav.world emerged out of a long-running chat exchange of mixes, tracks, and some playful speculation: If you were going to make a platform for DJ mixes in 2023, what would it look like?

Mixes are a unique type of musical expression. They capture a specific moment in time, determined by the knowledge and style of the artist. A mix is as important a creative statement as an album, remix or EP. One mix can change an artist’s career, one mix can open a listener’s mind to something completely new.

We miss the importance that mixes used to have. So, we made a platform for mixes. 

Each wav.world mix gives one artist the time and resources to create whatever kind of mix they want, to share something sonic about who they are and what they love.

Every wav.world mix will feature a longform interview with the artist which gets to the heart of what moves them—in music and in life—through text, video and image. Each edition of wav.world will feature the commissioned work of music journalists, visual artists and graphic artists.
