From the perspective of a tape-native that has fixed up a few decks and cheap boomboxes, all of these examples simply sound like (1) a defective machine, (2) bottom of the barrel tape stock or (3) a very poorly set-up recording. When recording to good tape on a good deck with proper bias and level, you’re not going to hear a lot of this „tape character“ stuff. In fact, it’s just going to sound pretty boringly normal. But let’s be real, it’s all fun and games here. I bet in ten years there’ll be plugins simulating mp3 compression for the ultimate nostalgia trip.

Mangled vocals are overlaid with instrumentation rather than this be a ‘sung’ track or precise meaning behind vocal and melody, on purpose it needs to be listened to.  It perhaps confuses, annoys, or delights.
