Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this sixth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1991, utilising only the Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed - over 100 breaks in the mix! In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #11 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1997, a year notable for the divergence of two distinct sounds, the underground independent sound nurtured by labels such as Correct, ABB and Rawkus and a glossier, commercial sound largely assoicate with the output of the major labels. Notable albums include Biggie’s seminal ‘Life After Death’ and at the other end of the spectrum Jurassic 5’s debut ‘J5’ EP and Company Flow’s leftfield classic ‘Funcrusher Plus’. Artwork pays tribute to the ABB Records logo.

Tru Thoughts Wax Poetics DJ Mix by Robert Luis

In celebration of the Hip Hop’s 50th year, we’ve teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this twelfth (and final) volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the years of 1998 and 1999, utilising only the Funk, Soul & Jazz tracks from which they were originally constructed – 60 original breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley’s iconic ‘Super Disco Brakes’ compilation series.

On November 23, 1993, Snoop Dogg released his debut solo LP Doggystyle. Hot on the heels of his standout appearances on Dr. Dre's 1992 solo debut The Chronic, Doggystyle rocketed Snoop to stardom. Following in the sonic footsteps of The Chronic, the album was one of a number from the era responsible for popularising the emerging G-funk sound, with West Coast funk, P-Funk, and boogie samples colliding with polished production values to great effect. The album ultimately would go on to achieve quadruple-platinum sales.

In celebration of the album's 25th anniversary, DJ Matman has crafted an exclusive mixtape of album tracks, alternate versions, interview snippets and of course original sample material, which we're pleased to present in collaboration with WhoSampled.

Riding on the heels of their first single off of Vol. 2 (Walk On By) with its orchestral soul arrangements, the second single from Vol. 2, Rotary Connection's "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun," is an ode to the beautifully epic orchestral arrangements of producer Charles Stepney.

But this time, the Decoders have decided to venture into the Brazilian repertoire, incorporating Samba and Jazz elements into the group's psychedelic soul arrangement.

This version features <a href="http://soundcloud.com/wax-poetics/sets/venice-dawn-something-about/">Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn</a> vocalists Loren Oden and Brooke De Rosa on vocals, as well as Jungle Fire's Steve Haney on percussion and Brazilian musician Quetzal Guerrero on percussion and berimbau.

The Decoders "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun"

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.
