#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Edition #1 Part 1 (1979-1983) mixed by Chris Read

Some records seem to come out of nowhere. Witness this debut EP by the half-Mauritian percussionist & singer Mo Kolours, which unites an array of more familiar influences with the Sega music of his island roots.

These heavily rhythmic slave songs from the Indian Ocean offer a vital clue to the sound of this enchanting EP. The rhythms lead the way here, whether the straight percussive workout of Drum Talking or the crafty vocal manipulation that drives the low-slung bump of Biddies, a song that traces an imaginary line between Theo Parrish and Gonja Sufi.

Dead of Night mines the symbolism of The Beatles’ outwardly chirpy Blackbird while his own Bakiraq (like Burt, the songwriter) resembles a soul classic pieced together from fragments around the flickering light of a fire. There’s a sense of spontaneity at the heart of Mo Kolours’ music and much of the music he loves: Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, King Tubby and many more. Like the best records, the result is so much more than just the sum of its influences: it’s a new feeling which breathes fresh life into the past and keeps its eyes set firmly on the future.

This EP boasts a the first ever remix by our favourite re-edit crew: Truth Is Light, whose incredible series of limited 12"s from Vancouver have accorded them cult status.

Mo Kolours - Biddies

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Part 2 of this first edition in the series documents Hip Hop’s progression through the years 1984 to 1987, an era in which the dominant sound of Hip Hop changed drastically with the increasing popularity of drum machine programmed beats and early sampling technology. This mix leans quite heavily toward sample based material from the latter part of that era.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #2 (1987) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Bridging the gap between the disco rap of the early 80s and the early sample based hip hop of the mid to late 80s (featured on the  mixes posted in this series to date) is a rich groove of drum machine led rap tracks characterised by the raw stripped down sound of bass heavy 808 kicks and snappy hand claps. But somewhere else in the melting pot of music released in that same era is the unlikely blend of fast paced electronic beats, funk, rap and leftfield European electronica that formed the Electro scene of the day. Whilst 80s Electro sub-genres are plentiful, this mix doesn’t concentrate too heavily on any one of them; West Coast dancefloor cuts from the likes of Egyptian Lover rub shoulders with European pioneers Kraftwerk and other US Electro Rap and Electro Funk. Cover art pays homage to Street Sounds iconic 80s 'Electro' compilation series.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #2 of this mixtape series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1988, a year which many consider the ‘golden year’ of the late 80s. As samplers took over from drum machines as the producer’s tool of choice, the James Brown drum sound ruled supreme and lyrical subject matter explored new territory. With seminal (and at the time controversial) album releases from the likes of Public Enemy and NWA, this was a year that changed hip hop forever. This mix features classic cuts from singles and albums released during this important year. Artwork pays homage to iconic late 80s imprint 'Fresh Records'.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #3 (1988) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #3 of this mixtape series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1989, another year in which the genre’s dominant sounds changed drastically. As the James Brown influenced sound that had dominated the late 80s played out its final days, a new wave of acts including De La Soul burst on to the scene injecting a light hearted honesty into their lyrical content which paved the way for the emerging ‘new school’ sound of the early 90s. Early releases from the likes of X Clan hinted at the ‘afrocentric’ sound that would come to prominence in the following years. Artwork pays homage to classic late 80s imprint 'Cold Chillin'.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This bonus mix rounds off the 1980s portion of our chronology, shining a light on the somewhat maligned sub-genre of Hip House. It's reasonable to say 1989 was this sound's moment in the sun and this mix and the majority of tracks in this mix hail from that year. Featured artists include some of the biggest names of the era who dabbled in the sound (Big Daddy Kane, EPMD and King Sun) alongside those with a more direct affiliation with the genre(Doug Lazy, Fast Eddie, Tyree). In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #4 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1990, a year when the genre really spread its wings with a diverse range of new sounds breaking in all corners of the US and overseas. 1990 is probably most celebrated as signalling the birth of the ‘afro-centric’ era, with debut albums from X-Clan, Professor X, Poor Righteous Teachers, A Tribe Called Quest and many others hitting stores. But 1990 was also an important year for the artists elsewhere on the Hip Hop spectrum: Compton’s Most Wanted, Capital Punishment Organisation and Above The Law all released debut albums proving LA had much to offer outside the mainstream popularity of NWA. Aside from new developments, established artists including LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy and EPMD all dropped classic long players.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this fifth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1990, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fourth bonus mix follows last month's Hip House round up with a collection of Hip Hop tracks influenced by the New Jack Swing sound of the late 80s and early 90s. Featured tracks include production from some of the producers central to the New Jack Swing sound – Teddy Riley, Eddie F, and some from those better known for a more classic Hip Hop style who also dabbled in the sound during the era – Marley Marl, Pete Rock and many more. The cover artwork references the classic Uptown Records label sleeve.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fifth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s, the fusion of Hip Hop and Dancehall vocals. The mix features artists who hung their hat on that particular fusion (Mad Lion, Bobby Konders), Hip Hop styled remixes of Dancehall cuts (see DJ Muggs’ remix of Danny Red), Dancehall artists who vocalled Hip Hop beats (Mega Banton, Lady Apache) plus some pairings of Dancehall Acapellas with Hip Hop production from the era exclusive to this mix. The cover art references Nervous Records' 'Weeded' sub-label responsible for a number of key releases in this particular lane.

Notorious BIG 'Ready to Die' 20th Anniversary Mixtape mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

Edition #11 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1997, a year notable for the divergence of two distinct sounds, the underground independent sound nurtured by labels such as Correct, ABB and Rawkus and a glossier, commercial sound largely assoicate with the output of the major labels. Notable albums include Biggie’s seminal ‘Life After Death’ and at the other end of the spectrum Jurassic 5’s debut ‘J5’ EP and Company Flow’s leftfield classic ‘Funcrusher Plus’. Artwork pays tribute to the ABB Records logo.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Whereas the previous year had been dominated by leftfield and arguably less commercially accessible indie releases, 1999 delivered more accomplished and club friendly indie releases with labels such as Rawkus really growing into their hype. In celebration of the Hip Hop’s 50th year, we’ve teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this twelfth (and final) volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the years of 1998 and 1999, utilising only the Funk, Soul & Jazz tracks from which they were originally constructed – 60 original breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley’s iconic ‘Super Disco Brakes’ compilation series.

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.
