Myles Mac has been adding colour to Melbourne’s electronic music scene for over a decade now. His presence is felt across a number of seminal productions: from the Lost Weekend parties at Boney – where a few of Waxflower’s own shared late nights and sweaty mornings – to his pairing with DJ Camov and the formation of Project 95 and, of course, the world renowned Melbourne Deepcast label and mix series responsible for showcasing local and international artists. Myles stands out from the crowd as a consummate curator of feel good times.

Big Mac played amazing mixes for us at Waxflower throughout his residency. This one provides a glimpse into his exceptional taste, sleuthing between jazzy vibes and street soul and hip hop. No doubt if we locked the doors and begged him to keep playing we would have ended up deep in Mac’s first love: house. Shifting gears and pleasing ears – that’s Myles Mac.

007 Callum Vass

Callum has sewn his presence into the fabric of our musical journey. We're sure he clocks in more hours than some of our casual staff, and he’s probably switched off the lights for us too. When someone as passionate about music and discography as Callum hangs out in our bar, it makes us feel like we’re doing something right.

Callum’s curations are a loving homage to his years spent travelling to Japan. Patient selections of jazz, soul, funk, and rare groove pair a 'Kissaten' experience with a "look at what I've just pulled out of a dusty crate in back-street Tokyo" humblebrag.

Callum has stayed on beyond his month-long residency to curate our Sundays as 'Rotary Connection'. Every Sunday, Callum invites a special guest to play at Waxflower for the afternoon.

DJ Earl Grey aka Nik Thorup takes us beyond the dancefloor and into the realm of the cerebral. During his month-long residency at Waxflower, Nik spun a cornucopia of captivating and unique records that always left us hungry for more.

We’re still not sure how Nik managed to intertwine so many polarising genres so effortlessly. Few DJs can stroll from ambient to jazz, from folk to dub, making it sound so organic. Maybe there’s a link to be drawn between this kind of musical curation and some of the more adventurous wine-making processes we’ve come to love at Waxflower. Skin-contact wine often leads to bolder, more intense, and less predictable palates. 

Shady wine-making comparisons aside, it was an honour for us to have Nik play for the whole month. We’ve spent plenty of time listening to his recorded sets, so it was a treat to experience his talent live at Waxflower.

DJ Possum AKA Maria José Gallo is an avid bird watcher and a music connoisseur. As a Colombian native, music is in her blood: “Llevamos la música en la sangre.” This mix showcases Maria’s passion for making music a full-body sensory experience. It’s a blend of Spanish and other European influences sprinkled with Brazilian classics, tropical Cumbia and African rhythms. Muchas gracias señorita bonita!

We’re excited to present the dynamite duo Dan Beck & Jesse Outh-Aut. Collectively they have almost half a century of DJ experience. They’re serious diggers who’ve amassed a healthy collection of wax over the past two decades. Their first B2B set stretches back to the early 90s. Their long relationship has produced a kinship that yields seamlessly smooth sets that glide through genres and styles. Expect the unexpected with a three-hour mix that explores everything from glitchy downbeat electronica to lush deep house to funky grooves.

Our next guest is the one and only Miss Goldie. If you’re not familiar with Miss Goldie, maybe you’ve been living in a cave surviving on berries and roots for the last three decades. Miss Goldie is the host of the “Boss Action” show on PBS. She’s been collecting records since the ‘80s, and her incredible collection of rare soul and funk 45s is a testament to her deep love of music. It’s a collection that makes even the most discerning cratedigger envious. Open a bottle of red, get cozy, and enjoy a three-hour soul and funk mix from Miss Goldie.

Deft J (Jesse) played Waxflower patrons a selection of both familiar and forgotten head-nodding gems he has acquired over years of collecting. A melodic blend encapsulating electronica, rolling house, off-kilter hip hop, to ambient jazz and back again, with a focus on vocals and the kind of uncontrollable desire to groove brought upon by careful selections and a few too many Chartreuse sours in the afternoon sun.

Jesse also formed one half of the mysterious bloggers and DJ's 'Love Hotel District'; A place where the emotions of hearing unforgettable records for the first time are balanced against the nostalgia of hearing songs you forgot you knew.

"And if you don't hear your name right about now, no disrespect, because we still love you here, out in Melbourne, but in the time it took to right this review, we consumed half a bottle of Pet Nat" - An ode to thick basslines and short work by none other than KC.

In this wonder filled session from loved local Rev Lon (Gab) we were guided through lush ambient textures, IDM (very), jazz, with a dash of street-soul.
This is a soundtrack that could very well set a young, headphone wearing Scarlett Johansson on a feint stroll around an unknown city park (Lost in translation). 
One of those mixes where you finish and the world feels different from when it began, know what we mean?

If the sum is greater than its parts, then we are looking at a mighty large formation when Elliot Ofmarco and Salvador Ricardo join forces. This is not a rare alliance, as these two best buds happen to galivant about town together in all of the right places.
 
We have known about these rascals for some time, though it only occurred to ask them over to Waxflower when one of us happened to cross paths with Elliot in a group dedicated to Rotary mixers. We’re glad we did, as their spirit behind the platters was just good old fashioned fun, the way it ought to be. Have a gander to this wonderful mix where they sleuth through their deep collections, pulling out all sorts of slower jams – “Got your papers? Because I’m going to need to see some identification on those tracks!”.

Over the years I've bumped into John here and there, all over the place. At one point, by chance, I even worked on an IT project with him, we never actually spoke, and I can only remember John being the guy who wore the large fancy headphones (probably an early sign of his passion for music). We'd continue to cross paths on those niche Facebook music groups too ('Rotation' for example). 

When we were opening Waxflower, he stuck out in my mind as someone who'd be great to have play through their no-doubt thoughtful collection. I knew he had spent time in Brazil and we'd talked about Bossa Nova collections, so I'd only hoped that we'd get to here worldly and carefully selected gems. That's exactly what happened! John has a truly wonderful trove of music, and this brilliant mix only begins trek his long path of digging.

Surfing in with rhythmic waves of Brazilian Bossa Nova, slowing it down into street soul-esque jams, and picking the tempo back up to close things out – There are only jams here, with Portuguese vocals and musing melodies trending through the whole mix.

A big salty salutation from 'The Tortoise', who we humanly know as Torquhil Anderson - though we'd need to dry him off and double check his micro-chip.

For this mix we've been lucky enough to have the beloved man-creature pop out of his shell and onto the two sturdy ship wheels of the Waxflower bar-boat to serenade any passers-of-port with a few rhythmic full-mast high-torq shanties. Who knows what the tide will drag in!?

The Tortoise has been making house music for over a decade now, playing heat packed sets (the fire brigade we've personally witnessed on one occasion), and of course hanging out and around the Galápagos archipelago.

Herrera (Occasionally Abraham - Occasionally Baberaham) is a special alumnus of the 'Waxflower College of Good Times' in more ways than one. The only human on the planet to have officially cooked in the Waxflower kitchen, hosted customers in the front, and stirred hot wax on the DJ pans.

This mix hears Herrera unpacking heat from deep underground - Much like the volcanoes of his home place, more west than the Western Sahara, the Canary Islands. Some might call that exotic, never quixotic, a Balearic blend of upper atmosphere downtempo electronic.

Adriana is a dear friend of the Waxflower family, amongst many others within our humble local music scene. We are not the only ones who have fallen under the spell of her infectious charisma.

So yes, it was an absolute pleasure to hang out with this ray of sunshine for a whole month. We all thoroughly enjoyed playing audience to an array of both new-age and classic sounds through her sets, having been hand-picked from all corners of the world. This was about as close to a foreign cultural experience as we have had in awhile (insert the obvious sentiment for the times).

Waxflower's very own resident, Jimmy Pham a.k.a Walter Majik a.k.a label head for Kyoku Records, has been quietly collecting vinyl oddities and sharing rare grooves for over a decade. Walter Majik has a deep appreciation for music and is constantly searching, discovering and learning more about the diverse musical sounds of the world. Jimmy / Walter's number one reason for lost sleep is the fear of all the tracks that he hasn't yet discovered.

In his sets you can expect to hear a mixture of old, new and 'future' sounds, smooth street soul, city pop, left field rarities, and the right downtempo cuts.

Do you know Jamie Bennett? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t, maybe you heard one of your friends whisper: “That’s the Crown Ruler guy." One thing is undoubtedly true – Australia’s music scene wouldn’t be the same without Jamie’s influence. The wonderful Crown Ruler brand has exerted its influence throughout the country and far beyond. If this is news to you, start looking a little closer to home and you’ll spot the clues.

We’ll keep this intro brief – a cheeky web-surf will provide plenty of thoughtful write ups on the man’s roots. We think Jamie’s an incredible DJ. A trove of aural excellence comes through in this mix; Lovers rock, sun-kissed gems, and plenty of soulful rarities from all corners. It’s a little less about genre and a little more about mood.

When we joked with Jamie that the cost of the records in this mix alone must be his retirement fund, he slyly shot back: "That's my super." It’s hard to explain the effort, the research, and even the resources that go into pulling together the sort of collections that are at the heart of a mix like this. Perhaps that’s a little digger-to-digger nod, a silent sign of appreciation at the incredibly impractical art of carting around bags and bags of records in this day and age.

Our admiration goes beyond knowing the work involved. Hearing and experiencing Jamie’s talent through Waxflower’s speakers was, for us, a thing of joy. And at the heart of it all is Jamie’s love of music. We were honoured to have him play on the wheels at Wax. Music and Human connection, Enjoy!

Josh – ‘Keysie’ to his buds – is a certified good sort. He’s one of the key figures behind the infamous and beloved Hopkins Creek Music Festival. Hosted in the Kulkurt volcanic crater in northwest Victoria, the festival has a unique atmosphere that attracts a tight-knit community of dedicated music enthusiasts. The festival’s slogan is ‘Music & Mateship’, and their warm and welcoming approach resonates with us at Waxflower. They keep it boutique, they keep it together.

Keysie is known across town for his impeccable taste in music and thoughtfully curated sets. This little excursion includes a seamless blend of sophisticated jazz and timeless soul records. It’s a warm mix that motivates daydreaming and thought-surfing. It’s a mix with steez. Baby, that’s Keys.
