OK EG - Intertidal Zone Previews [WPR001]

Every so often the universe delivers one of those special parties, the ones that stick with you and send shivers down your spine bassline. A few months ago in a brief recess between interstate lockdowns, we had the absolute pleasure of playing the closing set at the Bridge courtyard for our friends at Lovejoy. We woke up at 6am, had a 7/11 coffee and a tequila and headed straight into the rave for a 9am set time(!!!). The pure rapture that ensued thereafter was captured via this recording. We originally weren't going to share it, but as we and our Sydney dance community family are both currently locked down, we thought it would be nice to relive the moment together, from our lounge rooms to yours.

After highly acclaimed releases from OK EG and Donald’s House, Wax’o Paradiso Recordings proudly welcomes Naarm/Melbourne producer Midnight Tenderness (Ryan Hunter) to the fold. Over four tracks the ‘Hydrosphere EP’ continues the label’s narrative of platforming contemporary antipodean psychedelia with three masterful productions and a remix from Boorloo/Perth’s Hame DJ.

As a producer with influences rooted in dub, street soul, boogie and the DNA of UK club music, Ryan draws down on the Middy T sound with the title track ‘Hydrosphere’, a blend of broken machine funk, glistening synth lines and beautiful crisp drum programming. ‘Rain Vibe’ takes the sound palette further adding a hefty wub for good measure. ‘Catamaran’ transports us back to the golden era on the Balearic isles, with the original evoking Ibizan sunset cruises whilst Hame DJ’s remix brings some Madchester chug to the mix.

To say this has been our bucket list gig of all time would still be an understatement. We are blown away by the love (and stamina), from everyone that stayed up with us to the most glorious sun-drenched 7am of our lives.

Stalwarts of Melbourne’s rudely healthy music scene, Wax’o Paradiso have been bringing rare groove and dusty disco gems to all corners of Victoria and beyond for most of this decade. The trio is made up of Simon TK, Edd Fischer and Andy Hart, each stars in their own right – Simon runs the Club d’Errangé nights in Melbourne, Andy helped to found the institutional Melbourne Deepcast and more recently the brilliant Voyage Recordings, and Edd helms an afternoon radio show on PBS alongside running the brilliant Freedom Time parties. Since striking up an intercontinental relationship with Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section, the trio return to the capital this week to take over Corsica Studio’s room 2 for the Rhythm Section
