"Here's my two (and a bit) hour set from Field Maneuvers back in August, my favourite festival in the world.

This was by far the most time I've ever spent preparing for a single set or mix—I probably went through 10-15 crates of tracks, obsessing over flow, texture and tempo. Eventually, I landed here: an expression of love for dance music at 174/140 BPM.

After learning the recorder malfunctioned on the night, I quickly re-recorded it to ensure I reflected the flow of the night as closely as possible.


The set represents exactly what I personally wanna hear on massive sound systems right now and is a love letter to the hours danced in that field with my best friends.

subglow/Live 7: Compliments @ Field Maneuvers '25

The first-ever live recording from an elusive icon of dubby electronic music.

Lore is an underrated quality. Neuroscientists have mapped that music elicits similar feelings in the brain to when we satiate cravings, but what about the psychological impulse that drives listeners of a certain disposition toward everything they don't know?

It's tricky to put your finger on, but artists able to conjure intrigue without overhawking the backstory can really cut through—just ask SAULT, [ar:pi:ar] or Gerald Donald. Then there are those who don't try whatsoever. These are the ones who stay in mind the most.

In 2001, a striking 12" called Ship-Scope emerged through Chain Reaction, credited to Shinichi Atobe, with no other info available. Okay, mulled fans, this is probably a cat-and-mouse game dreamed up by someone on a label with a fine line in foggy obfuscation. Vainqueur on a wind-up? Another Moritz 'n Mark alias?

But no: Atobe was real, and really had posted a demo to Hard Wax. It was that simple. Then he went back to his day job—until, after 13 years of silence, an even better follow-up emerged.

From the near-perfect Butterfly Effect onwards, Atobe has built up one of the most revered catalogues in underground circles. A steady clip of elegant, transportive dub techno and deep electronics has arrived on Demdike Stare's DDS, complimented by the launch of his own label, plastic & sounds, earlier in summer 2025.

Atobe has also made strides into the public domain, DJing intermittently, as well as performing live for the first time in 2023, gracing WWW at the tender age of 52. It's that debut 2023 show heard on RA.1009: a hypnotic yet comparatively pumping set full of Atobe staples, as well as material you won't find anywhere else.

Contact with the big man, as you might anticipate, is glacial: since we first reached out, the RA Mix has changed name, look and rolled over into its second millennium. Still, patience pays off. This is a one-off we're stoked to run. – Gabriel Szatan

The essence of psychedelia is disrupting expectations and altering perspectives - what better place to do so than in the vortex of the rave? 

It was an incredible honor to be a part of the inaugural edition of System Activate. The entire weekender campout rave was an exercise in intentionality, a generous labor of love with visionary execution. Anchored by a single stage with a pristine sound system, brought to life by a seasoned, die-hard-DIY team, and animated with an incredibly unpretentious, open-minded, and imaginative crowd of ravers, System Active was truly a novel, eye-opening adventure that struck real sparks of psychedelic inspiration. 

I believe this is one of the finest sets that I have played to date. Completely at ease in the booth, I played fervently and completely from the heart. This is a totally honest and unrestrained rendition of my creative screwball sensibilities as a DJ, conjuring a propulsive rhythmic tunnel and peeling away into moments of whiplash slack-jawed surprises. Rooted in wormhole-traversing techno but stretching well into psychedelic sludge, shameless sentimentality, poignant lessons, heaving bass-weight, and references to formative personally-precious material, this is a completely earnest translation of my psyche that also incorporates the work of friends and peers. 

It was a deep joy to be in the company of so many brilliant and clever dancefloor scramblers and dear friends as I landed us in dawn's first light. I am deeply grateful for this experience, and excited to share this transmission from the vortex.

Furtive live at System Activate 2025

b2b sets are a delicate dance, especially so when meeting a teammate for the first time to collaborate on the spot. without prior discussion of direction — listening to each other’s selections, brief communication between blends and attention to the lovely folks on the dancefloor brought us all into sync over time. there’s a point in the set where it starts to sound less like two DJ’s and more like a cohesive, unified journey. there was also a moment where the dancefloor passed ‘the wave’ into the dj booth.   the spiral shows itself. 🌀😍

I can’t help but reflect back on this set like playing a pickleball match with a partner with whom I’m totally in sync: Mars & I vibed off each other’s tracks all night to build or shift the momentum however we saw fit. Hearing our tracks played slower and filthier through Globus’ delicious soundsystem was a bucket list-tier experience. Staying in the 100-130 BPM territory without the urge to go fast & hard too soon was a joy in that room.  This recording represents what a DJ team working in unison sounds like.
