Nigerian-born, Paris-raised, now Berlin-based, Wayne Snow, today shares "Seventy" via Roche Musique (French Kiwi Juice, Darius). Channeling the sun-kissed, soulful influence of his time spent growing up in Nigeria, "Seventy" deftly weaves elements of electronic music, neo-soul, and more, into a sultry slow jam (for fans of Sade, Masego, or the legend Fela Kuti).

Says Snow about today's release, "'Seventy' is song about perseverance, about overcoming life's obstacles without letting go. I imagined a seventy day countdown to motivate myself to bounce back after a tough year when I felt everything was slipping out of my hands."

Featuring avant-garde styling, digital body scanning, CGI, and contemporary dance choreography, the striking accompanying visual pays homage to Afrofuturism, the vibrant stunning landscapes of the South African desert and Snow's relationship to both. Starring a lone figurine – Snow himself – the visual was taped at the beautiful Tankwa Karoo National Park near Cape Town, South Africa. 

Snow’s custom headpiece and suit were custom designed for this video, created with 3D printing by the art director and stylist Anna Verloren van Themaat and her husband Reep Verloren van Themaat. Travys Owen (an acclaimed photographer & director), producer Allison Swank (who recently won Best Short Documentary at the IMDB Independent Shorts Awards) round out the team overseen by The Swank Group (who have previously worked with the likes of The Roots, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, Burna Boy, and more). 

After relocating to Berlin in 2013, Snow became central to Berlin’s burgeoning future jazz and neo-soul scene; as part of Moe Fabrik, he was instrumental in the emergence of nu jazz. Alongside Max Graef, he wrote ‘Under The Moon’ and ‘Red Runner’ and eventually released his debut solo album via Tartelet Records to praise from Fader, Vice, Clash, Boiler Room, tastemaker Giles Peterson, and more. Now signed with influential Paris-based label, Roche Musique (home to FKJ, Darius, and more), Snow is gearing up to realize his singular vision even further in 2021. His ultimate goal: expansion; to situate his art on a different plane altogether and explore how music and art can inform the mind.

There’s nothing cold about the music of WAYNE SNOW. The Nigerian-born neo-soul artist has been channeling the sun-kissed, soulful vibes of his homeland ever since his first encounter with a synthesizer as a child. Now Berlin-based, Snow has been spreading warmth and his unique creative vision across the globe together with Roche Musique and highly acclaimed collaborations with FKJ, Folamour, Darius, Max Graef and Glenn Astro. And now he stands ready to release Figurine, his most ambitious solo project yet.  

Across it’s ten tracks, Snow deftly weaves neo-soul, alternative pop, R&B, soultronica, and hints of jazz into a mesmerizing stew. His music is studied and stylish, quiet passages of calm giving way to vivid bursts of energy and colour. Produced together with Crayon, Nu Guinea, Brandt Brauer Frick and featuring acclaimed future-jazz artist Oscar Jerome, Snow employs a delightful array of neat details and flourishes that highlight his compositional brilliance. 

Four years in the making, Figurine is a conceptual, personal work of depth and reflection, one that critically considers humanity’s obsession with masks and our creation of avatars. Inspired as much by nature and the work of social psychologist Erich Fromm, as the music of Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, Figurine is not a full stop. Rather, it’s an invitation – to think, to probe, and to sink into Snow’s bright, storied music. 

It’s a record based around a simple question - “Who is the real you?” – and led Snow to explore rebirth, individuality, and our unhealthy obsession with social media. Love and our increasing sense of alienation are deconstructed, as is the reality of modern day relationships. And intertwined with all this is Snow’s Nigerian heritage, and the deep sense of pride and admiration he feels towards his country of birth. 

Figurine’s visual identity have been crafted by the album’s Art / Video Director Travys Owen, a collaboration in every sense with another truly visionary artist. The tightly knit creative team was lead by the award winning producer Allison Swank, recent winner of the IMDB Independent Shorts Awards, known for her work with the likes of The Roots, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, Mumford & Sons and Burnaboy. Shot across  Tankwa Karoo National Park, Johannesburg and Cape Town, the accompanying videos pay homage to Afrofuturism and the vibrancy and beauty of his homeland. Contemporarily styled, figurines dance through otherworldly, colourful landscapes, exploring relationships, both to each other and to nature. The sense of life -of vitality – is palpable; his music, and the message it conveys, is equally as alive. 

Following a string of singles which received critical acclaim from NPR Music, The Evening Standard, Vogue, BBC Radio 1 + 6 Music, Le Monde, Clash, The Vinyl Factory, Notion, Afropunk and L’Obs amongst many others, Wayne recently stepped up to the COLORS stage to deliver a breath taking live performance of the album title track.

I may tell myself that everything is fine, but the truth is that the world we're leaving you is in terrible shape. Now more than ever I feel motivated to do my part. Singing is definitely not enough, we need to act more together and now!
It is in this spirit that I joined EarthPercent project, led by Brian Eno, alongside 100 incredible artists with my own interpretation of Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot".

"Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ‘superstar,’ every ‘supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity — in all this vastness — there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The excitement we get from what we barely understand. We know very well that it is illusory to enclose a feeling in a box. But often we are in a hurry to reduce everything to a simple expression so as not to fail in front of others. Even with unlimited means to justify ourselves this charade is always unfruitful. The complexity of our nature cannot be hidden indefinitely behind a mask.

This moment has been a long time coming.
After months of dreaming, writing, sweating, doubting, dancing, recording, deleting, re-recording, laughing, crying (and more dancing)…
I can finally say it.

My new album SNOWDOME is coming out on October 17. 

This project has been pure joy to make. I built it with incredible musicians and friends, and it's full of spirit. It’s strange (I hope so) and, above all, honest. 

I have just dropped another single from the album - "All I Care About" - a song for the moments when nothing else matters. Not politics, not fame, not the noise around us. Just that raw feeling you can’t explain, but you know it when it hits.

Whilst the club setting may feel detached from many of us at this time, Secretsundaze’s forthcoming release, courtesy of the Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, will transport you back to the depths of the dancefloor’s energy. A three track EP which is sustained by Ziggy Zeitgeist’s rhythmic consistency on the drums – his scintillating live performance at Church of Sound in August 2019 caught the eyes of the label, leading to the fruition of this project.

His sonically ambidextrous ear has culminated in this compelling piece of work. Having met Berlin-based artist Wayne Snow at a record shop in Neukölln, the pair started jamming together at a converted office space in a building that was attached to a techno club. Their afterhours sessions were mixed with spontaneous trips to the club, allowing Wayne’s soulful vocals and Ziggy’s broken drum patterns to seamlessly merge with the darker, more heavy textures of the club environment.

Wayne’s silky offering on Something Special allows the serenading seven-and-a-half-minute meditation to unravel gradually, enchanting the dancer with its harmonious house beat, accompanied alongside interweaving melodic layers, from Finn Rees on keys, that build its trance.

Despite his frosty surname, Wayne Snow encapsulates the word “warmth” in every dimension of his being, both personally and creatively. Taking early inspiration from legends such as Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, he has united a global audience from his new home in Berlin, developing a contemporary take on the sun kissed, soulful vibes of his homeland Nigeria. You can feel this warmth blooming in abundance through every song and performance.

Wayne began to experiment with instruments at a very young age after being given a synthesiser by his mother. His first musical breakthrough came in the form of the "Red Runner" EP, released on Tartelet Records in 2014. Working with the widely praised producer Max Graef, the pair wrote both “Under the Moon” and “Red Runner”, which put him firmly on the map of the emerging future soul / jazz scene at the time. Shortly after they dropped the stunning “Rosie” EP as well as the highlight of Max’s album “Running”. These influential first productions led up to the release of his his debut LP “Freedom TV" which was loudly applauded by the music press with glowing reviews from Clash, Mojo, The Fader, VICE,  Boiler Room, Vinyl Factory and championed heavily by influential tastemakers like Gilles Peterson.  

Wayne is also responsible for the “Nightbirds” project which he joined together with globetrotting superstar FKJ and regular collaborator Darius (with whom he wrote the stunning “Helios” and “Lost In A Moment” for France’s Roche Musique). You can find his sublime vocal performances on productions with artists like Folamour, Neue Graffik, Noah Slee and the Circle Of Live collective, or via imprints like Brownswood, Dekmantel, Rhythm Section. He was recently shortlisted by both Crack and Clash magazines as the next artist to breakthrough, something soon to be validated by a stellar, new album in the pipeline.
