"Hope for the Christ Child" is Part II of V from the "For the Christ Child Suite".  Part II contains the only minor theme in the entire suite.  The tone is very solemn, the tempo is slow and meditative, and it is written to reflect, musically,  a world in exile and despair. However, we are reminded that even in our darkest times, there is still Hope.  This original Piano Solo has a vamp section that should be used as a soundbed for a spoken word that encourages such a Hope. "Death of the Christ" - Part III of the V Movement Holy Week Piano Suite ~ Good Friday.  I wanted to capture the chaos and the solitude of the crucifixion musically, and I hope this track does that.  From the pain, to the mocking, to the sorrow, to the acceptance, to the forgiveness, to the last breath......I will rerecord this soon on an acoustic grand piano.  My KORG Triton Extreme could not handle the complexity of the polyphony.

"The Wait" - Part IV of the five movement Holy Week Piano Suite ~ Holy Saturday. I attempted to capture the sound of waiting by marking time in this movement.  I used a single quarter note that repeated for the entire piece; I imagined a tapping pencil, or a dripping faucet, or the sound of someone pacing a floor. This became the musical foundation on which this movement was based.

The Wait - Holy Saturday - Holy Week Piano Suite

"Communion" - Part II of the five movement Holy Week Piano Suite ~ Maundy Thursday. A meal amongst friends that became known as the Last Supper.  Musically, I attempted to capture the love and hope that Jesus shared during this sacred meal. The theme is very melodic, almost bringing a lyrical feel to the piece.  Two moments are represented in the movement:  The sharing of the bread and wine, and the acknowledgment of Judas betraying Jesus. The minor section brings to life the Judas moment.
 
I composed this particular movement with the "take this bread, drink this cup" phrase/thought running through my head.  You can almost sing those words over the theme.

Communion - Maundy Thursday - Holy Week Piano Suite

"Prepare the Way" - Part one of the five movement Holy Week Piano Suite ~ Palm Sunday. The difficult challenge of capturing the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem with music......which might not have been so difficult if he had ridden in on a horse, a chariot, or even walked...but a donkey?!?! What an awkward moment....a King....on a donkey....I can only imagine that there were a host of emotions and thoughts going through those witnessing the moment first hand - excitement, confusion, relief, despair, joy, sorrow, embarrassment....

This movement is the beginning of a journey.  I used the melodic structure that was common in the prayer songs of Christ's generation, mixed with tension phrases and a fanfare, all over the repeating rhythm of a traveling donkey.  It concludes unresolved, pushing you into the next movement of Maundy Thursday.

Prepare the Way ~ Palm Sunday - Holy Week Piano Suite

"Sunrise" - Part five of the five movement Holy Week Piano Suite ~ Easter Sunday. I attempted to capture the solitude of that sunrise into the moment when Mary's sorrow turned into excitement and joy.  I imagine that she was walking, almost dreading the day and the task, but anticipation and excitement overtook her as she got closer and ultimately discovered the tomb was empty. Christ is risen.  He is risen indeed.

This movement concludes the musical journey that begins in Movement 1 - Palm Sunday. You'll hear a hint of the theme I used in "Lullaby for the Christ Child" resurface in this movement.  Bringing the connection between new birth and new life.
