In this Oral History recording produced in the run up to the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 we hear from Sara Harnett, the Women's Recreational Football Officer at Sheffield & Hallamshire County Football Association. 

Sara discusses what her role entails, and the positive impact the work of the FA has had on women and girls football in the Sheffield area. We also hear about Sara's own footballing journey, from a young girl initially deprived of the opportunity to join a local team, to her job as a football coach, and why we should acknowledge and remember the achievements of the many great women in football, whose shoulders the players of today stand upon.

Sara looks forward to the upcoming UEFA Women's EURO tournament, the opportunities it affords the women's game, and her expectations and hopes for the Lionesses this summer.

Sara Harnett - My Footballing Journey

In this Oral History recording produced in the run up to the UEFA Women's EURO 2022, Rebekah Grassby shares her footballing story, and joy that girls of today can fulfill their footballing dreams.

We hear how as an 8yr old, she was the first girl to play for her local team, but dreams of taking football further were just fantasy back then. Rebekah celebrates how times have changed, and how the increasing visibility and coverage of Women's football means young girls can finally dream of a life in football, and follow inspirational players in the women's game, in a way that didn't exist 20 years ago.

Rebekah explains how her love for the sport remained, but it was a move to Sheffield as a student that saw her return to the pitch with the Sheffield Medics Women's Football Club, and more recently with Football for Foodbanks, both of which have inclusivity at their heart and believe "Anyone Can Play."

Rebekah looks forward to this summer's tournament and celebrates the historic significance and positive decision to make the footballing home of Sheffield a host city

In this episode Amina Abu-Shahba from Swansea University and writer David Brayley discuss some of the activities taking place in Swansea as part of a year-long project celebrating the city's sporting heritage.

The project celebrates a range of sports and sporting venues. From Swansea's passion for surfing, to the former Vetch Field. From cricket and rugby union at St Helens, to the local parks and pitches.

As well as exhibitions and collections, two films have been produced. Funded by Swansea University, The Heritage Lottery and the Wales Innovation Fund, 'In The Blood' explores sporting lives in Swansea and can be viewed here:

Swansea’s Year of Sporting Heritage | Blwyddyn Dreftadaeth Chwaraeon Abertawe

In this episode – which coincides with National Sporting Heritage Day 2023 (#NSHD2023) – we are joined by Pippa Britton, Sporting Heritage’s newest Ambassador, and first from/in Wales.

Pippa discusses her own sporting story in archery in which she competed internationally, including at two Paralympics. She also explains her motives for serving on the governance boards of several organisations such as Sport Wales and UK Anti-Doping since she finished competing.

Part of Pippa’s role will be to champion and support the development of the Strategic Framework for the Sporting Heritage of Wales funded by the Welsh Government.

Pippa Britton: Wales' new Sporting Heritage Ambassador-Llysgennad Treftadaeth Chwaraeon Cymru newydd

In this episode, recorded as part of The Art of Sporting Heritage Month we explore the incredible story of Rose Reilly MBE. As a former footballer for both Scotland and Italy, Rose has received long overdue recognition in recent years, including in the form of a much celebrated portrait of her being displayed by the National Portrait Gallery, Scotland, about which Rose says:

"the fire in my belly, and the love of the beautiful game comes out in that portrait." 

We hear all about the challenges Rose overcame in her career, from a 9yr old girl calling herself Ross to fit into the local boys team, to how an eventual move into professional football resulted in a lifetime ban by the Scottish Women's FA. Not that this rejection stopped Rose, who went on to win multiple Championships, and Golden Boots as a striker in Italy. Followed by a World Cup win representing her adopted country, and being voted the best player in the world.

Professor in History, Fiona Skillen from Glasgow Caledonian University, herself a great advocate for Girl's and Women's Sport in Scotland asks the questions, including how does Rose feel now about that Scottish ban, and what did the eventual recognition mean to her.

Recently our Wales Co-ordinator Russell Todd was invited on to the Radio Cardiff morning show to discuss the work of Sporting Heritage in Wales. He was accompanied by one of our principal collaborators, Dr Andrew Hignell, from Glamorgan Cricket and the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket.

Andrew talks about some of the memorable moments from Glamorgan's past and explains why a hair-brained idea for the River Taff came to be so influential in Cardiff, and Wales's, sporting heritage.

Russell talks about how the heritage of sport can be used to explore aspects of social, political and cultural history; and not always positive aspects either, as The Codebreakers statue in Cardiff's docks community shows.

As part of WCVA's Better Futures Wales Community Foresight project three communities across Wales have been working with WCVA and the School of International Futures to identify local visions for a better future. The project is funded by the National Lottery Emerging Futures Fund.

Two of the communities are geographical; the third is a community of interest: young people. The project has partnered with EYST (Ethnic Youth Support Team) help engage with their community of young people across Wales. EYST deliver a range of services to support young people from BAME communities.

In this podcast we hear from Russell Todd and Rolando Bertrand Ruiz as they reflect on their experiences of facilitating futures planning with young people.
