The Carolina Chocolate Drops are leaders in the revival of the old-time black string band music of the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, proudly carrying on the tradition of such musicians as Joe, Odell and Nate Thompson, Dink Roberts, John Snipes, Libba Cotten, and Emp White. The group's members honed their skills under the tutelage of octogenarian fiddler Joe Thompson, one of the last black traditional string band players alive today. Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson both hail from the green hills of the North Carolina Piedmont, while Dom Flemons is native to Arizona. They have performed at festivals across the country, including the Philadelphia Folk Festival, globalFEST, the National Folk Festival, and the National Jug Band Jubilee, and in 2007 recorded Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind.

Hey, y’all! It’s the Blue Plate Special!

The WDVX Blue Plate Special is a live performance radio show held at noon, Monday through Saturday, at the Knoxville Visitor Center on the corner of Gay Street and Summit Hill Drive. It’s free and open to an audience of all ages!

Hosted weekdays by Red Hickey, the WDVX Blue Plate Special is broadcast and webcast around the world. Can’t make it down for a show? Listen live online. If you’re in town, bring your lunch and join us for real, live music in beautiful downtown Knoxville.

The WDVX Blue Plate Special program was created in 1997, the same year WDVX started broadcasting as a community public radio station from a 14-foot camper studio in Norris, TN. The noontime show included themed broadcasts and occasional live performances from visiting artists. In late summer of 2005, WDVX brought back Knoxville’s rich tradition of mid-day live radio shows by producing the Blue Plate Special in front of a live studio audience from its new home in the Knoxville Visitor Center, located at 301 South Gay Street. The WDVX Blue Plate Special is now a signature event in downtown Knoxville and was recognized as the 2006 Knoxville Area Museum/Attraction of the Year.

From blues to bluegrass, country to Celtic, folk to funk, rockabilly to hillbilly, local to international, it’s all part of the real, live music experience on the WDVX Blue Plate Special.
