We met each other randomly in club in Berlin back in 2017, we could have never known how important this gathering was for our future. We have always been sympathetic to each other and one day Kataya asked for a back2back in 2019 and Shirley was immediately on board. From that point on it was love and a thick friendship developed. An addiction to unique music tastes permanently grew and we kept on inspiring each other. And then, in the beginning of 2020, S H I R K A Y A was born. We played our first official gig as Shirkaya in February. Since then, not only gigs are on the timeline, also their first producing projects developes.
 
Both love the 80s - we discovered Dark Disco as a common genre. Kataya's funky, bouncy and driving tunes paired with Shirley's dark techno touched and acid basslines will surely leave you unable to stand still.

INTERVIEW:
1. Wie lange legt Ihr nun schon auf und was hat euch (damals) dazu bewegt, anzufangen? Hattet Ihr Support dabei oder wie habt  Ihr das Auflegen gelernt? 

Kat: Ich lege seit 2017 auf, war aber schon vorher sehr tief in der Musikszene Berlins verankert. Zuvor habe ich eher Partys & Festivals organisiert, hatte also absolut keine Zeit zum Auflegen. Ich war sehr lange Zeit in Frankreich und als ich wieder zurück nach Berlin kam & eine Trennung verarbeiten musste, fing ich mit dem Mixen an. Sobald ich das erste Mal hinter den Decks stand war ich Feuer & Flamme. Das Auflegen habe ich mir selber beigebracht.
Shirley: Das erste Mal kam ich 2017 mit dem Mischpult in Berührung. Ich habe mich lange im HipHop Cosmos aufgehalten und den Gedanken aufzulegen bereits vor vielen Jahren gehabt. Dieser Musik Nerd steckte halt schon immer in mir und wollte nun endlich die komplette Crowd mit guter Mukke versorgen. höhö... und natürlich zum Tanzen bewegen. <3

2. Was ist euer bisher schönstes gemeinsames Erlebnis beim Auflegen gewesen?

Shirkaya: Unser erstes Mal zusammen auflegen war absolut ausschlaggebend für unseren weiteren gemeinsamen Werdegang. Es war in der Beate Uwe in Berlin & es hat gefunkt. Seither leben wir die Musik zusammen und sind sehr gute Freundinnen geworden.

3. Was wünschst Ihr Euch, sollte in Zukunft in der Clubszene .anders laufen? 

Shirley: Sexismus sollte ernster genommen werden, denn er ist überall. Bessere Awareness Konzepte wären super!
Kat: Auffällig ist, dass Frauen oftmals nach Bookings gefragt werden, eher um ein ausgeglichenes Line-Up zu präsentieren und nicht weil sich die Booker ihre Musik richtig angehört haben. Sie werden oftmals nichts als Künstlerinnen wahrgenommen, sondern als Lückenfüller und auch das muss sich ändern.

Shirkaya: Wir wünschen uns mehr Achtsamkeit und Diversität hinter dem Pult.

4. Gibt es irgendeine Arbeit oder ein Projekt, das euch gerade sehr am Herzen liegt?  

Shirkaya: Wir legen nicht nur zusammen auf, sondern sind auch Teil der Culturama Crew. Unser Herzstück ist der Culturama Bus (ein London Doppeldecker Bus, den wir mit Hilfe einer Crowdfunding Kampagne ausbauen lassen haben), mit dem wir hoffentlich dieses Jahr nun endlich ein paar schöne Projekte durchführen können. Lenas erster Club-Gig ist noch gar nicht so lange her - um genau zu sein 1 1/2 Jahre. Inspiriert durch die Musik hat sie also die letzten Jahre genutzt, um für ihr Studium zu lernen und um Vollgas Richtung Techno zu geben und jegliche freie Zeit in die Musik zu investieren.
Inzwischen hat die Kölnerin auf renommierten Labels (Katermukke, Dantze, Like Records, ..) ihre ersten Releases abgeliefert und konnte zuletzt noch auf dem Dach der Lanxess Arena bei einem Live Stream ein Set spielen. Fragt man Lena nach ihrer Lieblingsmusik, so liegt ihr „Wohlfühlbereich“ in der House Musik und im Minimal.

Mit „anders“ verbindet Lena Mut und vor allem auch mal aus der Reihe tanzen zu dürfen.

Unfortunately my set wasn´t recorded properly during our Hauptgang night on the 31.07. 🙃 Now, after attending many festival this summer I had more time at home again. So I decided to re-record my set. Of course it is not 100% the same as the set I played in that night, but I hope it gives you a brief glimpse of what the vibe was like. I had a ton of fun 🥳 Even though it felt like 100 degress inside!

- wie kam es dazu : Meine erste Schnittstelle mit der Technoszene hatte ich im Februar 2018. Ein großes Dankeschön geht dabei an Jacob raus, welcher mich zu der 'Konception - Survive the Night' eingeladen hatte. 
Von der ersten Sekunde an war ich von der Atmosphäre und dem friedlichen zusammen feiern beeindruckt. In dieser Nacht stand die Musik und die Gemeinschaft im Vordergrund, eine Erfahrung welche ich von meinen bisherigen Clubbesuchen nicht kannte. Seit diesem Tag hat sich mein Leben aus musikalischer Sicht um 180° gedreht. Es vergingen einige Monate in denen ich regelmäßig die Technoveranstaltungen im Raum Hildesheim & Hannover besuchte, während sich in mir der Gedanke verfestigte, dass ich meinen eigenen Teil zu der Szene beitragen will. So kaufte ich mir meinen ersten DJ-Controller und fing selber mit dem Mixen an. Es dauerte nicht lange bis ich feststellte, dass das bloße mixen von Tracks mir nicht ausreicht. So begann ich mich dem Produzieren und entdeckte hierbei meine große Leidenschaft. Bis heute verbringe ich die meiste Freizeit zuhause am Computer und bastel an neuen Ideen. Ein großes Dankeschön möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch nochmal an Nico Tober und Luca Severith (Case Chamber) aussprechen, welche mich über Katahaifisch schon zu Beginn meiner Reise unterstützt und inspiriert haben. Heute kann ich stolz sagen, dass ich ein Teil des Katahaifisch DJ-Kollektivs bin.

- bevorstehende Projekte & Events : Für dieses Jahr steht mein erster Release auf Katahaifisch bevor. Ebenso plane ich für dieses Jahr auch meine erste EP, welche ebenso über das Label Katahaifisch release. Gigs etc. stehen aufgrund der Pandemie nicht bevor, jedoch hoffe ich, dass wir im Sommer wieder etwas feiern können!

- was bringt mich auf die Palme : Oberflächliche Menschen, Diskriminierung jeglicher Art

- Lieblingsclub ( privat ) : Indiego Glocksee, KuFa Hildesheim

- was stört mich an der Szene (was würde ich ändern) : Mir gefällt der 'neue' Trend nicht, dass auf einigen Partys und Festivals rücksichtslos und viel zu viel mit dem Handy mitgefilmt wird. Aftermovies sind was schönes und sollten für jeden der dort war als Erinnerung genug reichen. (Natürlich kann man mal ein Foto machen oder ein kurzes Video machen, aber bitte im Rahmen und mit Rücksicht auf die anderen Menschen)

That rainy winter morning, the little witch woke up in a wet and windy forest.  With her eyes still half-open from a good night’s sleep, her heart suddenly skipped a beat from excitement when she realized the next night there would be a full moon, which meant she’ll participate in the monthly witch coven (which always happens in a different location and in the ever-changing company of two other witches).
After finishing her daily inspection round of the muddy woods, the barefoot girl washed her feet in a little stream, said goodbye to the forest dwellers, and flew into the unknown.  She knew she would – as always - reach her destination by simply following her inner compass.  
This time she flew straight to the East and it was a really long flight.  Never before had she ventured this far eastwards.  After a couple of hours, the rainclouds dissipated and soon she was flying over a snow-covered winter landscape under a glorious blue sky.
While passing over a huge forest, she sensed she had reached her destination and gently touched down in a clearing.  To her great surprise, she wasn’t welcomed by two witches but instead of that, two female wolves were waiting for her.  After a long hug with both animals (hugging a fluffy wolf is particularly pleasant when it’s freezing cold), it appeared that warm clothes and boots were waiting for their guest, with exactly the same grey color as wolf fur.  After putting on the comfortable cape, the little witch felt a very special energy descending over her body … and she immediately knew this was pure wolf energy.  And to her amazement, all of a sudden she was capable of speaking wolf language fluently.  Then the two wolves took the little witch deeper into the woods.  It was an old forest named Puszcza Białowieska, one of the very rare primeval forests in Europe and most trees were already centuries old.  With the immaculately white snow carpet, the majestic trees looked like pillars of a natural cathedral.  Finally they reached the biggest tree the girl had ever seen of her whole life.  The wolves explained this oak tree was named ‘The Guardian of Zwierzyniec’ and its circumference was a staggering 658 cm.  The wolves led the girl to the other side of the tree, where she found an ancient book, lying on a carpet of moss and fern leaves.  The eldest wolf explained that this holy book used to belong to an old wise witch, who was sadly burned at the stake during the persecutions of the 16th century.  Luckily, the old woman saw her fate coming and managed to hand over the holy book to a pack of wolves, who protected it ferociously for over 50 generations.  And since a few years, on every full moon day one random witch is being invited to come and read this venerable book.  And on that snowy day it was the little witch’s turn to get the honour to discover this hidden treasure.  With cautious movements, the girl opened the ancient book and started reading.  On page 1 she found out that the writing of this book had commenced on the 1st day of February of the year 1202, which was that day exactly 819 years ago.  After that, the girl browsed further and deeper into the book and soon she was completely absorbed into this invaluable treasure trove of wholesome magic spells, but it also treated more mundane subjects like a recipe of horseradish stew, a dish which the little witch had so far failed to get right.  The witch was so immersed in the ancient book, that she kept on reading all night long (with the help of some floating lights which she created using a spell which came straight out of the book).  The next morning, the girl was full of new energy and insights, thanked the two female wolves with a (long and fluffy) goodbye hug and flew back westwards to her own forest, wiser and more accomplished than ever before …

➢I hope you agree to answer a few random and fun questions to share with our listeners? 

Of course, let's get started

➢To start you off tell us what song puts you in a good mood when you wake up in the morning? 

Listening to the music I play today, one wouldn't think that I'm a big fan of Soul & R&B. But “It's my house” by Diana Ross always succeeds in putting a smile on my face.

➢Tell us briefly how you chose aka-tony as your artist alias? 

When I created my Soundcloud account, I had no idea that I would be DJing again in the distant future. Back in 2010, it annoyed me that I often got confused with a certain Tony Williams who worked for the same company as me. I often got e-mails and other things that were meant for my almost namesake. So “aka tony” quickly became a running joke among my colleagues and that's how this Soundcloud account name came about. Then in 2018, when I started DJing again after break of 20 years, I had no desire to change this name.

➢You have been busy working on your own aka-tapes as well as conducting interviews for Planet Ibiza. What are your next plans for 2021 and beyond? 

I am currently preparing a fundraising project for indigenous peoples. For the dia do indio on April the 19th, the podcast series Heimlich (AT), Faultierdisko (DE), Casa Caos (BR), Amalaya (SA), Cosmovision (CA), Downtempo Rituals (USA) and Planet Ibiza (ESP) will each release a podcast with music with indigenous influences and call for donations to an organization dedicated to the cause of indigenous peoples. I am super grateful that I found so many podcast series who liked my idea and decided to support this project. 

In addition, at Planet Ibiza we will launch a new format called Inner Sense in February 2021, which is all about spiritual, organic music. We are happy that we were able to engage Andi from the Leipzig Tribe of Peace to start off the new format. Jamie Sisley will then contribute the second episode. I am looking forward to it.

➢Since the pandemic, it has been a difficult time for the music scene, how has it changed within your hometown and what do you think will be different when things return to a certain “normality”? 

Of course, the last 11 months have been incredibly bitter for many cultural workers and I am very sincerely sorry for that. My heart aches when I think of all the people who are suddenly faced with existential questions. Although I have the feeling that there’s still as much music produced as before, but of course all the music that is being created is somehow influenced by the pandemic. However, I believe and hope that with the return to normality, new spaces will emerge. This would be very positive for a city like Zurich, because here, too long and too often the same style has been played repeatedly. Fast and hard. Hopefully this will change a bit in the future, because the downtempo revolution as we know it from Berlin or Vienna will hardly skip Zurich. The people and club operators here just need a little longer but the younger generation already understands it very well. When I listen to artists like Akra Ondo or Oilst, I know that Zurich has a lot to offer.

➢Lastly, regarding this mix you have done for us, can you tell us a little bit about your thought process behind choosing the tracks you chose? 

Well, this answer will be brief. I'm less of a concept guy, so I didn't put a hundred thoughts into it before I recorded the mix. It was important to me at that time to play well under 100 bpm and to put songs with fat basses in it. The rest came naturally.
