This piece is an audio poem, a sound art/spoken word project. In some way it is an invocation, a ritual of the River awakening. It starts with sounds of early spring, the thaw. It’s getting warmer, the snow is melting. But the River is still locked under ice as we saw it in Bereznik. A human voice and mouth sounds is used here to communicate with Water and praise it for what it is - a natural medium, a mighty force that connects worlds. The communication with Water is private, intimate and fragile yet powerful.The River is waking up from sleep, crashing the ice. It's coming to life and starts breathing openly. It flows and brings life. It’s a silent celebration, a muted hymn.

The project started with deep water sensations of rivers and lakes scattered in different places. In the beginning of our work we imagined the Ustya river, that had brought people to Bereznik village many years ago and formed their community, economy and householding. Inspired by qualities of liquid power that is capable of bringing together communities and groups of people separated by distance, we address our project to people all over the world. We hope that the sound of water as well as the sound of our voices and bodies will awaken the feeling of nature inside their bodies and minds.

This piece is a collaboration project that originated within the ""We are Here"" Creative Laboratory's trip to Bereznik (Russia, Archangelsk district) in March 2019. A group of artists, performers and musicians united around a river theme and set up what was unofficially called a ""Water laboratory"". We started experimenting with sounds of water in all its variety and also presented a performance at one of the gatherings. The audio recordings made during that short period formed the basis of this piece. The work continued afterwards in Moscow and Helsinki. We exchanged files and ideas, sending them back and forth.This is the first realization of the river-themed project. We are hoping to continue this work and expand it in various directions, for example, eco-activism.

Мы шаг. Не ноги, что нами ступают.
Мы биение. Не сердце, что нами стучит.
Мы мост. Не земли, что соединяются.
Мы путь. Не точка прибытия или ухода.
Мы место. Не тот, кто его занимает.

Having gathered a team of like-minded people in 2018, we started a joint exploration of the phenomena of discrimination against marginalized groups in the society, in order to support each other and to work with topics that concern us. An ecosystem of communities and people intertwined by common questions and similar drives for creation has gradually begun to grow around. There are no clear boundaries: We Here are informal groups with alternative ways of living, cultural and ethnic minorities, people with special needs and defenders of nature and human rights. We are part of a worldwide movement that stands for the freedom of being ourselves and a shared responsibility for peace. We Here symbolizes a non-violent presence, even when this presence is neglected. Re-learning about ourselves and others, We Here is a project on the edge of the old world and the beginnings of a new culture.

We are the air. Not the chest that breathes us.
We are the word. Not the lips that pronounce us.
We are the step. Not the feet that are stepping us.
We are the beating. Not the heart that beats us.
We are the bridge. Not the land that connects.
We are the way. Not the point of arrival or departure.
We are the place. Not the one who takes it.
We do not exist. We just are.
