Some (incredibly) rough cuts of some songs I have been working of late as well as a few older ones that I have never quite got round to having recorded for prosperity. Recorded on a fairly dubious microphone (hence the crazy feedback / clipping)..... its a work in progress to get them recorded properly.....

Wine We Drank Last Night - rough cut

All The Pretty Lights was written a few weeks before recording actually began, as most of my favourite tracks usually are, the lyrics were written in about five minutes in a continuous stream. The first line was originally the opening to another song I was working on that went no where in the end. I had played the song live quite a few times at our local open mic event in Oban and had went down really well. David and I talked for quite a while about it before recording and decided to pull back the tempo, played live it it quite a bit faster but in the end I'm very glad we decided to slow it down. The backing also features my first exploits on the E-Bow on telecaster and I think its my favourite song on the e.p so far.

All The Pretty Lights

A Belly Full Of Fire had been floating around my head for a month or so before I went to the studio to record, the last track was originally going to be A Song For A Girl I Know but I had started to play the song live and everyone seemed to really like the song including David (Anderson - producer). The decision was a fairly easy one to go with a six track e.p with A Belly Full Of Fire as the closing track. New song - new direction. The thought was a nice little end to the e.p, pointing forward to the next project whatever it may be.

A Belly Full Of Fire

Slow Dance, despite being the first song that I knew I wanted to put on the e.p was saved until last to record. It's one of my favourite songs to play live. We wanted to keep it really simple on the record and it's one of the songs that I play that I'm really proud of writing. Hope the passion that I try to put into this every time I play it, shows through. But that's up to every one else to judge, not me.

A Good Man - rough cut

I am Dave Ayling and I write songs and play guitar and various other instruments under the moniker 'We Looked Like Giants!'. Im from the west coast of Scotland, from a fine wee town by the name of Oban. 

Growing up on a diet of Brit Pop, Pop-punk, Folk, Country, Indie, a big old slice of Hip-Hop, Electro and all matters in between, I started playing electric guitar at about fourteen or fifteen but hardly seriously. I put down my guitar to concentrate on the rigours of growing up, riding bikes, snowboards and chasing girls. 

I started really playing again at the age of nineteen when I was diagnosed with cancer and was pretty much stuck indoors every day. I started playing acoustic then and fell in love with the sound, It seemed to suit me more than my electric. Writing songs became a means of escape and I plugged away writing songs and playing in my bedroom for the next four or five years whilst I recovered from illness. 

So that kind of brings me up to present day of sorts. I held a big party for the fifth year clear of my cancer and got some of my friends bands to play at it and was convinced to play a few songs of my own. It went pretty well and people really liked my songs.... I had fell in love with performing my songs to the mightily scary public. 'we looked like giants' was born. 

'we looked like giants' is basically putting a name to something which has existed since I first started writing songs, after struggling to put a name to whatever it was I was trying to create, 'we looked like giants' jumped out, due to a love of all things Death Cab. 

We Looked Like Giants! is a solo project, but friends who are far better musicians have since joined up on occasion and then to put me to shame by pointing out I dont know the names of the chords im playing. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think of my songs.
