Found this one on an old DJ tools CD from about 2004. Laura Brannigan's "Self Control" over Tiga's cover of Talking Heads' "Burning Down The House".

May go back and remake this when I get chance, as there is a bit of tempo drift on some of the beats near the middle, and muddies up in places. But the essence is there :)

Found another old DJ tool I made on an old CD. Its a booty with Jack 'n' Chill's "The Jack that House Built" as track A, but I can't for the life of me remember what the backing track is. Maybe Breakfastaz?

If anyone can ID it that'd be fantastic!

Ten years ago I started a series of these, uploaded on the last day of the preceding month, roughly an hour each. They were put out under my "FakeID" moniker, which pre-dated the Geek Chic and Spec. duo with Lee, and were sequenced (not live) mixes, so lots of looping and editing to stich things seamlessly together. For the most part they contained releases from that month (along with a few classics), reflecting what I was playing at that time.

Most of these I lost for assorted reasons, but recently I've discovered a few survived in various corners, so I'm re-uploading them here... partly for nostalgia's sake, partly because I still think they're ok listening, and partly because there are tracks in them which (rather alarmingly) I still play out frequently.

Tracklistings however have pretty much been lost to posterity, and I've let a lot of other music enter my brain since then so can't recall many details, but if anyone wants to help re-build the tracklisting in the comments that would be all kinds of wonderful!

Peek-a-Boo has long been a favourite. I remember the first time I heard it thinking "this is nuts...", but it somehow managed to remain really accessible, almost poppy.

Part of the oddness is down to the way the track was put together, being a re-edit itself. Budgie essentially reversed, chopped and edited a loop of the brass and drum parts from "Gun", a John Cale cover they'd recorded the year before (1987). this was used as the basis for the track, with additional drums, guitar and accordian layered on top. Siouxsie's lyrics were then recorded using a selection of microphones, giving the vocal a distinctive disjointed sound. Naturally this sort of thing could be rolled out much more easily today with the average DAW setup, but the old-school approach and attention to detail mean the song still stands up today.

So why re-edit it? Basically, I wanted to be able to play it in a Spec. set, and while it kinda would've fitted as it stands it really needed a bit more oomph to sit alongside the production style of the rest of our playlists. Plus the beat needed tightening up a little to keep it crisp on modern PA systems, and a more DJ-friendly structure would be handy. Along the way it seemed to then morph into some sort of Italo-Goth-Disco hybrid. But I guess there are worse genre meldings in existence.
