Channel Tres

Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. "Controller", Channel's debut single on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir), took classic Detroit house and reimagined it with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. Pitchfork, NPR, Gorilla vs. Bear, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, Apple, and KCRW were early champions, along with Australia's esteemed Triple J radio, who put "Controller" in full rotation.

In advance of his self-titled debut EP (out July 27 on Godmode), Channel blesses us with "Jet Black", another taste of his unorthodox union of four-on-the-floor and Compton. The song is an oozy ode to the blackest of black, over a ferocious modular synth instrumental that takes cues from industrial and early electro. "I never reply when you hit me/ I'm off the grid you can't get me" – it's hard not to feel invincible when this one plays. The video, directed by cult filmmaker Anthony Sylvester, captures Compton at its most contorted, where barbershops double as churches, where liquor stores become after-hours raves.

Pl4net Dust is a force to be reckoned with! This Parisian producer has been taking the world by storm with his refined ‘Global’ music, which he showcases in his dance-floor-ready debut release via Wile Out called ‘Solid Matter EP’ featuring ‘Cynthia’, a young classically trained singer/songwriter from Paris. Together, they create pure magic for our ears.

This five track EP takes the listener on a journey through sound & emotion, the carefully crafted setlist spotlights this journey starting off with the intro track ‘Kalua’. This dub track consists of progressive piano chords layered over UK funky drums and a load-bearing bassline to give the song a nice groove to get ya ready for the next track; ‘Fire Game’ which highlights Cynthia’s soulful vocals, setting us up for a deep groove with a melancholic emotional vibe. Next is ‘I Know You’, here Cynthia engages us with her clear message of surprise, gearing the listener up for the beat to drop and set off the dancefloor into a frenzy of ‘Global’ sounds. Next up is ‘That Song’, which brings in a more subtle chord progression sound and heavier drum groove in contrast to Cynthia’s sharp vocals, this song is that song. Last but not least, we finish off strong with ‘Up 2 You’, here Cynthia showcases her vocal range and sets the vibe with this marimba-driven masterpiece, bringing the EP to a masterful close with an insight of what to expect next from these two amazing artists.

Together, both Pl4net Dust and Cynthia, have created a work of art and have set the bar high for what’s to come from the new influx of ‘Uk Funky’ producers creating the next wave of ‘Global’ music.

Those who keep close tabs on the always-evolving Lisbon music scene are sure to have seen DJ Doraemon’s name by now. Possessing an impressive work rate for someone who is still only 22 years old – in 2019 alone he’s put out over 10 releases including several singles, EPs and an album – with the release of his Enchufada debut ‘A Todos No Céu’ Ivan Lima isn’t showing any signs of slowing down in 2020. 

After becoming a regular presence at Enchufada’s monthly club residency ‘Na Surra’ where he impressed with his high-energy DJ sets, we knew we had to get even more involved with such a talented young producer. After going through a 1GB file full of some of the most urgent and raw afrohouse and tarraxo demos we’d heard in ages, we had to stop scrolling when we came to ‘A Todos No Céu’. 

The title is Portuguese for ‘To All Those in Heaven’, representing DJ Doraemon’s personal homage to his grandparents are no longer with us, a fitting title for his most vital and urgent music yet. His new release is an unashamedly dancefloor-focused epic, built purposefully to ignite DJ sets on the back of its huge dramatic synth stabs and a relentless, stripped-down and pulsating beat, clearly inspired by (and simultaneously pushing the limits of) the afrohouse and kuduro templates that have influenced some of the most important music made in the Portuguese capital over the past decade.
