in their own way, each of these pieces explores ideas of duality, and the importance of being able to hold on to conflicting ideas and perspectives simultaneously... or as George Saunders would have it, letting contradictory ideas 'sit in the same cage sort of, vibrating'.

as is often the case, the contradictions here are less real than apparent, and things that might seem initially to be in conflict are revealed to be complementary. rather than standing in the way of progress, the tension between them can spur us forward, and force us to forge new meanings that can accommodate uncomfortable facts and perspectives.
