Chapters 2-3: Mother, Mother - Summary

At a mandatory Zenithian sermon, Mira struggles under the faith's suffocating expectations—restrictive dress codes, enforced note-taking, and the subtle hierarchies of devotion. While her mind escapes to visions of forest freedom, she endures humiliation from the devout who embody Zenith's purity obsessions.

That evening, desperate for answers about her absent mother, Mira confronts her father Elias. His cryptic response devastates her: "She's not like us, Mira. She walks a different path—a path we can never follow." Her violet eyes, so different from any human's, mark her as eternally separate, confirming her otherworldly heritage.

Seeking solace, Mira drags her best friend Kat to their secret sanctuary—a hidden waterfall deep in the ancient forest where the Wild Gods' influence remains pure. As Mira revels in the freedom of cold water and wild spaces, Kat systematically dismantles every reference to the old gods while pressing Mira to undergo Zenithian Baptism.

Their philosophical debate reveals the depth of Kat's transformation: Kat insists on absolute good, while Mira defends natural balance. Under mounting pressure and facing the loss of her only friend, Mira reluctantly agrees to speak with Lucien—a compliance that feels like a lie that may destroy her authentic self.
