TA MIRONOVA - Кто

This piece is the second version of Forest Studies: Speakers. It is a study of the local, often inaudible sounds within a piece of forest, in combination with pure soundwaves. 

Forest Studies: Speakers was recorded within 10 m² of forest and created to be presented within the same perimeter of 10 m², so the audience could be in the same ecosystem of the recorded sounds. 
The composition was originally made for a quadrophonic four-speaker setup. Because of the different interactions of the pure soundwaves, a matrix of overtones was created. Depending on one’s position, the listener could thus hear different overtones, and interact directly with the composition, and influence the sounds he/she heard. 
The composition combines sounds that were recorded within the perimeters of the installation with digitally generated white noise and sine waves. 

I started with scrutinising the area looking for sounding objects and other sound sources. I found a piece of metal on the floor that plays a major role in the composition, but I also used burning wood and nuts, stones, …
Furthermore I recorded within this 10 m² such things as: electromagnetic static, radiowaves, ants and a snail crawling, and so forth.

There is quite some electromagnetic activity in the piece because I wanted the piece to move between the organic, or natural world, and the invisible man-made activities that are mostly invisible. 
I purpusfully tried to avoid to go from one world towards the other because I think both worlds co-exist. It is more of an observation than a criticism of the actual situation (however I am very critical about it. 

That is also why the piece works better as a four-speaker setup, because you really get feeling of space. However I tried to keep this feel in the mix, you can offcourse never simulate it as well as the real thing. 

Also the setup was this of a continuous loop, which emphasises the circularity of the situation, rather than the linearity of our way of experiencing time. 

Another thing we can not hear in the stereo mix is the subtlety of the overtones. 
Because of the four-speaker setup, a matrix of overtones was created. Every of the four speakers generated a different sinewave, and thus a quadrophonic field of overtones. 
Depending on the physical position of the audience, the audience would thus hear different overtones.  
There still is a lot of micro tonalities, espec
ially in the last part, but the spaciousness is minimal compared to the one of the installation.
