Der Name Georg stammt aus dem Altgriechischen „Geōrgios“ (Γεώργιος) und bedeutet „der Landarbeiter“ oder „Bauer“. Er setzt sich zusammen aus „gē“ (Erde, Land) und „ergon“ (Arbeit, Werk) – also jemand, der das Land bearbeitet. Der Name wurde besonders durch den heiligen Georg, den Drachentöter, im christlichen Raum sehr populär.
